From personal experience...my daughter's mother is from Windsor and all her fam is in Toronto and Hamilton. We were together for 8 years so I've been to the "worst" areas of Toronto multiple times...spent weeks at a time out there. It ain't shyt "hood" about Toronto other than the lower income housing and "project" areas that are similar to what you could find in NY, Chicago, Detroit...ect. You got your petty weed, coke and pill dealers, a couple niccas pimping, a few stick up kids...but overall if you're like me (born and raised in Flint, lived in Detroit) Toronto is LIGHT. Which is actually a good thing, but a lot of Toronto niccas want their city to be some kind of war zone to show that shyt is "real" out there. Toronto is safe as hell. I guess if you came shinning out there trying to floss on some late night shyt a nicca might get you, but that's almost everywhere. Overall it ain't shyt "wild" or dangerous about Toronto.

12k is not a huge sum if he actually wrote 3 usable songs, he should've held out for more money and a song-writing credit

ah well. at least he got paid and the whole entire somali community know what kind of snakes his "friends" are:ehh:
Upfront, $12k for 3 Songs is actually more than decent & more than most Signed Writers with Publishing Deals are making per Song honestly. That's $4k a Song which is higher than most writers demands.

The average writer might land 3-4 songs that make an album a year. A-List Writers get maybe $5k-$15k a song during their peaks. New writers *MIGHT* get $2,500 until they've proven themselves.

There was a kid on SOHH years back who sold 3 beats to Eminem at $1,500 a track plus royalties if used because he was an unknown new Producer but that was a fair deal.

Do those figures include royalties though? $12k without royalties included for 3 songs that might be placed on a major release still sounds like he got fleeced to me, but I don't work in the music industry and I don't know how this stuff works

Every situation/deal is different... but let me give an example....

He didn't get fleeced at all. Most writers would KILL to get that upfront because nowadays a lot of writers are getting $0 until the Song actually goes through the Label paperwork that officially guarantees its PLACED on the album. That itself could take months & possibly YEARS. I know writers that recorded songs with Usher back in 2014 & he *STILL* hasn't released his album & has started over several times scrapping several artists/producers Songs. So imagine writing a Song for Kendrick in January... getting $0 until it's actually PLACED. Now imagine being excited that you have a Song on Kendrick in January... JUST to get news in October that it got scrapped. Would you have been happier with taking $3,000 upfront in January & RISKING no backend money or take your chance on not even knowing if you'll even collect a check?

It's a *VERY* complicated game sometimes...

$12k upfront for 3 Songs is more than reasonable & now he can take those Drake credits to any label & get a Publishing Deal all his own.

I never heard this Eminem story from SOHH, what's the story behind it? Do you remember the poster or what beats/album?

Don't remember specifically but he lived in LA. He stated that at one point Em invited him to I think Aftermath's studio & he listened to like 30+ beats or so (might've been less) then picked out 3 of them that he liked. He also posted the story on Futureproducers if you can search the forum & find it...

@trick

Also, this is why the best placements are on NEW artists... because labels are now releasing their Albums/EP's within 2 months of their Single Release whereas bigger artists tend to take forever "crafting" an album. Not to mention most checks only get cut twice a year now...
