No Whammies!!
Just saw this trailer. I really feel torn about this. On the one hand, I like hiking/simple rock scrambling myself, so the fact that a human being can do what this guy is doing is really fascinating to me. But on the other hand, the scenes in the trailer with his girlfriend reminded me of Timmy Treadwell in "Grizzly Man". It's really kind of stupid to tempt fate by doing something THAT risky, and I feel kind of funny about the fact that they're encouraging him by making him a star.

As far as what I would feel like to fall, it CAN'T be that much fun to bounce off the same ledges you just climbed up when you're on the way down :damn:

Just saw it in the theater. Beautifully shot, some amazing landscapes like you would think but also a decent job of capturing the difficulty of what he was doing as well as a lot of human emotion in the process. It ends up being a psychological case study of why someone would do something like this, what it takes to have the mentality to accomplish it, and what it does to the people around you.

He seems like an obsessive perfectionist like I imagine a lot of elite Olympic athletes are, doing the same thing over and over and over until you get it exactly right. The perfectionism extended into other things too, you could tell that he wouldn't let his relationships or anything else interfere with his goals, he had become a vegetarian out of commitment, he had started a foundation to help provide electricity to people in rural villages and stuff and gives away a third of his money to that. He's a really committed, principled guy, he's just chosen a strange thing to commit to.

A fellow climber described the feat in the perfect way, "Imagine that you're training for an Olympic event, and you have to win the gold medal, and if you do everything perfectly you'll win the gold but if you don't you die. That's what he's doing here." :damn:

Welp, ya'all always say that second place is first loser. :francis:

What happens when you know your life is so privileged you have to seek out imminent death to feel alive
It ain't really like that at all. You can tell he didn't have the easiest childhood - shy and probably teased a lot, there was like no affection in his family whatsoever, dad had Asbergers, parents had a rough marriage and then got divorced and then his dad died when he was 19. He didn't do all this crap because his life was easy, it's more that it just takes a huge amount of stimulation for him to feel anything at all. They image his brain in the middle of the movie and what they find going on there is crazy.

I despise Treadwell because he didn't know what he was doing and wouldn't listen to anyone else, and he put his girlfriend at risk and got her killed. Watching the movie you can see that Honnold isn't quite the same...but I do get what you mean about elements of that being there. And there's a decent amount of self-reflection on the part of the filmmakers and his friends and such, about whether they're enabling him or distracting him or how all that plays into the whole endeavor. I don't think they were encouraging him at all, I think they actually forced him to reflect on what he was doing more than he would have if he was doing it alone - there's a pretty big part of the middle of the movie that revolves around how that changes the experience. One of the cameramen in particular is just freaking shook by some of the stuff he does.

This is still playing nowhere near me:stopitslime:

It is in Madison next week but I am too busy to make the trip:stopitslime:

It is seriously looking like I will have to wait until November and I will STILL have to drive 90 miles:stopitslime:

I was actually surprised, it was playing in like 15+ movie theaters in LA and showing 4-5 times a day in each one. I had a 10-minute drive and got to go any day, any time I wanted. :lolbron:

Saw this a few weeks ago. Dude is a freak and definitely has Asperger's/other mental issues but is pretty funny.

Movie is worth seeing just for the cinematography and climbing scenes
