I think when we get any semblance of “rap” or something that’s “lyrical”. We overrate. But Gibbs benefits from great production and a nice flow above all else. Lacks hooks, lacks creativity, lacks content, lacks versatility, lacks quotables. Maybe it’s because we are living in an era where mainstream rap is water down cookie cutter shyt so it’s easier to stand out if your a true emcee but top 10 all time this and best rapper alive that. I don’t see or hear it.
Top 10 all time is way overreacting I agree.

But I don’t see how he lacks versatility. The dude is making dope songs over modern sample beats, trap beats, throwback beats, and r&b joints. He can even sing; some of the “vocal samples” on Fetti are actually Gibbs harmonizing.

Also his music videos are mad creative. He’ll even tell a big story over the course of 3-4 videos.

I think the main point of yours that I agree with is that he doesn’t always have a lot of conventional quotables. I think a lot of times he has entire verses that stand out, but not necessarily a few lines inside each verse that stand out above the rest of the verse.

So I understand that criticism, but I don’t mind it.

I also don’t think it’s a watered down era. I’ve been a hip hop head since ‘95 and this year I’m more overwhelmed by good music to catch up on than in a long time. There are so many dope lyricists and dope producers out now killing it.

I’ll name a few

Kendrick
School boy Q
Cole
Roc Marci
Lupe
Roc Marci got him beat.
Kendrick I could see an argument for.
:dead: at Cole and Lupe
Don’t really follow Q to speak on it.

but that being said, if you can’t name any other rappers with a Better 2010s discography, then he’s one of the beat from the 2010s isn’t he?

Im saying he’s not the best. Bandana is his best work and Pusha T had the most memorable verse on that album.

I get not following Q, but definitely listen to Blank Face if you haven’t heard it. Maybe my favorite album of 2016.

When I say he lacks versatility it feels at times his verses are interchangeable.

I said mainstream rap is watered down. Gunna, lil baby, lil Uzi,da baby, future etc aren’t lyricist.

Some of his verses are definitely interchangeable. I’ll give you that. But I think a lot of good artists have interchangeable verses.

No arguments from me on mainstream rap. But is Gibbs really a mainstream rapper? I think of him as an indie rapper.

Gibbs is probably the most overrated rapper recently. No verse of the year contender. Not classic guest spots. People saying he has the best discography of the 2010s lol.

Willie Lloyd was one of the top 5 verses of 2019 imo

And he raps over west coast, trap, boombap even did EDM..prob the most versatile sonically

He can be limited content wise but he branches more than given credit for
And yes some verses are interchangeable due to the aforementioned content issue but most rappers have shyt that is interchangeable...I'm not gonna knock him for that

That being said, there's a reason why two of the best producers of all time have done multiple project with him

And he has some damn good feature verses...better than Kendrick's that's for sure

As far as discography maybe Kendrick has had a better one and honestly its GKMC doing the heavy lifting there

Q....no. oxymoron was good and blank face was great but that's it. Habits was shaky and Crash talk was mid

Not into Roc Marci...he good but meh

Cole....lol gtfoh with that fold the laundry music:camby:

Lupe......nope, you wanna talk about overrated...start with him

This is a great point. When your peers in the art form (in this case numerous high level emcees and producers) are fans of someone's work, there's usually at least something there that's worth paying attention to.

There are obviously cases where people get over-hyped, and there are clout chasers that want to tack their name onto yours, but when legends in the game really love your work, then more often than not they're seeing something there they think is special. Especially when it's organic and not coming from a giant media machine that clearly manufactures hype.
