Someone help me out .....seriously. How is paying someone to be silent about an affair illegal? I don't get the basis the DA is charging him for.

it's kind of an untested legal theory, in NYC. At the state level, they would potentially be charging him with falsifying business records, a misdemeanor, they are bringing it up to felony level for some reason. The paper trail of the 130k, was doctored to reflect something untrue.

Also, linking it to campaign finance violations, which is governed by the FEC and the feds, (not the DA's office) campaign finance violations are essentially the idea that political campaigns are accountable to the public, and records have to reflect who was paid what or whatever.

The allegation is that this was disguised as a payment for a consultation, the 130k, for the purposes of a political campaign (the 2016 election) and not hush money to pay off someone.

My overall take is that this is thin and weak. but, charges aren't even formally brought yet.

Nope. They are categorizing the 130k as a payment to the Trump campaign when campaigns by law can only accept $2200 without it being disclosed and recorded. So in that context, it's definitely a crime. Apparently once you tie that down, then there are other crimes underneath it that can be prosecuted as well.

Trump still walking free regardless tho
