won't be getting into any more story details. It's usually hard for me to follow story games, to be honest. Reading a lot of dialogue and lore isn't me, lol. But this hasn't been too bad to follow so far.
In regards to gameplay, if you enjoyed the demo, then this will give you more of that enjoyment. Thankfully, the game does ease you into everything. Square Enix definitely dropped the ball with the demo though. I'm 100% in agreement with that. Wayyy too many things thrown at you and not enough time to explain them.
The starting area in the full game is different from the demo. I believe you start at the upper part of the map (In Junoon) as opposed to the middle. Things are more colorful. You see more ruins. It isn't all brown and doesn't give you that empty feeling. If you look at the map, there are 4 "biomes."
Is there a lot of chatter? Yes. Cuff and Frey do talk. I mean, I don't blame them because it's a new experience for both of them. She just got transported to an unknown place, Cuff wasn't always a bracelet. All they have is each other, trying to figure out what the hell to do, lol. I'm not bothered by this, personally. If you are, then you can adjust the frequency of how often they talk.
I like my 7/10 games. I've never thought that was a bad score. I also don't really care about scores in general. I'm probably 1 of 10 people who enjoyed Metal Gear Survive, and that didn't review too well, lol. I thought Saint's Row 2022, Valkyrie Elysium, DioField Chronicles, Star Ocean were all 7/10 games imo, but they gave me much enjoyment! So if this gets that score, it's not the end of the world. 7/10 can still be a decent, fun game.
I was surprised to see that you could swim! I jumped in, thinking I was going to die lol. So that was a pleasant surprise.
Graphically, it can be a hit or miss. Sometimes I capture something that looks nice but then other times, not so nice. Frey's model can look weird at times as well. I'm playing on Ray Tracing, fyi. I believe if you enable 120hz it's smoother? Someone more knowledgeable can answer that. But whether it's 30 or 60, I'm not picky with that either. I'll bounce between the 2 but could live with either.
Overall (even though I'm only on Chapter 2 and that's probably like 2 hours if that), I can see myself really enjoying it. Going by the demo, combat and traversal is really fun. Starting with Green magic means I can possibly appreciate it more, lol, since in the demo, fire was so much better. Also looking forward to the other 2 magic sets we can unlock.
Sadly, I won't be able to play again until Sunday but I'll come back at that point and give more impressions as I play more.
If it was going to be that high we'd have reviews out already. It's still gaming outlets here today talking about they can't get review code 4 days out.79-82.
"Do you think the game deserves the hate it's been getting?"
The worst thing the game's done has been release a cringey trailer a few months ago, but even before then (and well before the demo), the game's been shyt on nonstop. That's why discourse around this game has been so damn frustrating for so long. There have been some iffy trailers, presentation wise, as they were in development, but more than comments saying 'wow, that looks a bit muddy' or ' I can see myself getting motion sick', we got immediate hyperbole about how the game's trash and shyt and that the person hopes it fails.
Discourse has also been fukked because we KNOW that at least part of it is just straight up racism because the game had the audacity to be upfront about specifically wanting to use a black woman protagonist. It's not EVERY bit of criticism, but it's nigh impossible to parse what is and isn't motivated by it, especially because a lot of it can manifest in ways even the person saying it doesn't realize.
As for price, the $70 uptick is valid on a surface level since the increase in pricing is kinda bs in most instances, but also, if you look, it's easy enough to find it for cheaper than that or just wait. The people that want it to fail so that it'll be cheaper later confuse me the most because wouldn't you WANT the game to be good to justify the cost in some capacity, not want it to be shytty so that it drops in price faster? At that point, who exactly wins?
