If you're hearing voices then gravitating towards spirits and fairies surely won't help the situation, it only makes it worse because whose to say those voices in your head aren't God or a demon? (if you take that perspective)

whats even more depressing is that it sounds like religion is what may have caused him to feel comfortable and content doing this (I don't know all the details of what happened or his reasons why, but i mean that in the same sense that the 911 hijackers probably would have reconsidered if they didn't believe they'd immediately pop up somewhere in another dimension in paradise)

and he sounded pretty certain of whats next, which probably made him feel better about it
