In 97 a "fun smooth ass album" was super fukkin lame to a 13 year old. I was bumping Pac, Nas, mobb, mase, Jay, master p, bone, Twista, etc. That shyt was unspeakably corny to me at the time.
Yea ten year old me was literally bumping all those same guys plus Scarface. 35 year old me digs it :pachaha:I had never listened to this album til last month. Only Heavy D album I listened to in real time was the one that had the Big Pun and 8Ball song.

we have to be careful about revisionist history as old heads. here are some 90's acts that were successful to varying degrees after kid n play's run was over:

souls of mischief, pete rock & cl smooth, the pharcyde, main source, leaders of the new school, busta rhymes the solo act, de la soul, the roots, outkast, craig mack, goodie mob, lords of the underground, bahamadia, camp lo, tha alkaholiks, arrested development, digable planets, canibus, tracey lee, blahzay blahzay, a tribe called quest, black sheep, chi ali, double x posse, da bush babees, jeru da damaja. ill & al skratch, nice & smooth, rass kass, organized konfusion, grand puba, chubb rock, o.c., queen pen, mf doom, common sense, mos def, talib kweli, xzibit, diamond d, showbiz & ag, lord finesse, aceyalone, freestyle fellowship, funkdoobiest, house of pain, kurious george, positive k, masta ace, the coup, kam, trendz of culture, zhigge, and ahmad

and what do all of these acts i listed have in common? ain't nann one of them west coast gangsta rap or east coast street rap

what happened to kid n play is that they couldn't adjust to the new style of speak in a changed hip hip overton window over new sonic landscapes. all rap is a conversation & that conversation better damn well sound cool to the listener. but the thing is that among the hip hop community what was once cool can become very corny, you always have to have the ability to either a) be talented enough to shift that overton window yourself also known as the window of discourse (jay z for example) or be versatile enough to adjust no matter where the overton window goes (snoop is a great example). other than that most will simply get old & not be cool anymore. and it ain't just rapping it also includes beats. not being able to adjust to the new beats can get you out the paint real quick

by the time 1992 hit kid n play's vocal inflections, preferred sonic landscapes, slang, and content had become dated. you didn't want to hear a hip hop cypher with grand puba, cl smooth, busta rhymes, large professor, and play. LMAO! they were already done b & it had nothing to do with guns, bytches, blunts, and 40's.

by the way, did yall know that play is a year older than michael jordan b? true story, our brother is born in 1962 with kid being born in 1964, so they were old guys by then who found themselves competing with these hyped up new style of speak 70's babies like king just & das efx. even their talking just sounded like old nikkas. you ever hear yourself speak around generation z and you just sound old? hahaha word... the cadences, intonations, stop plosives, vowel sounds, and even breathing techniques will change with each generation let alone the slang & colloquialisms and that goes right into rapping. i left heavy d out of this because i put him in that rare talent category of LL, snoop, nas, e-40, and jay-z that can adjust over & over again but he had other issues relating to business. but yeah it's very difficult. kid n play's career in hip hop sounds about right b, approximately 3 to 4 years. word to ja rule & waka flocka

I don't think they were ever "on".

People fukked with them but they were in the dance/party/fun category of rap and nobody was really following them like Rakim, PE, etc. or "serious" rap.
