May 1st date booked for Top Rank at Cosmo
Is it really happening brehs?
All signs continue to point towards the reality of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao finally squaring off in a superfight more than five years in the making. The likely date will be May 2, with a hold already place on the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Once the event is finalized, additional fight week plans will begin to roll out. To be included on that list will be a May 1 show down the strip at The Cosmopolitan. The Nevada State Athletic Commission granted approval for Top Rank—Pacquiao’s promoter—to host a show on that evening during its monthly agenda hearing Tuesday afternoon in Las Vegas.
Top Rank has customarily held a show—usually on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights—during Fight Week whenever Pacquiao has fought stateside on a major Pay-Per-View event.
The NSAC also teased the possibility of a forthcoming Mayweather-Pacquiao announcement, with Commissioner Tony Marnell mentioning “a possible $200 million fight that might occur.”
Any such fight announcement will likely come from Mayweather himself through his verified Shots account. From there, press releases from his publicity team and that of Top Rank’s press office—as well as that of the network(s) involved with the event—will outline further details of the event, which will likely go down as the most lucrative in boxing history.
There has not yet been any indication of who would headline Top Rank’s May 1 show. Unbeaten 140 lb. titlist Jessie Vargas has been a fixture on past such events, although he is among a handful of backup options for Pacquiao should “the fight” not occur on May 2.
