Canelo-Pacquiao? Oscar Says Alvarez Wants Manny

Appearing on KTLA in Los Angeles on Friday, Oscar De La Hoya discussed Saul "Canelo" Alvarez's future after a planned December bout with Joshua Clottey was scrapped due to Canelo suffering an ankle injury.

The Golden Boy Promotions boss said Alvarez will return in May 2015, and only wants the sport's marquee names.

"He wants to go and fight Miguel Cotto, he wants to fight (Floyd) Mayweather, he wants to fight (Manny) Pacquiao," De La Hoya said. "He wants to fight the top, top guys. This kid is 24 years old, he is going to be the next superstar in boxing for like the next 10 years."

Alvarez hasn't reached true superstar status in America yet, but fighting the likes of Cotto and Pacquiao could catapult him there. Now that the Cold War is over, a matchup between Alvarez and Pacquiao is viable -- if they can agree on weight - and that would be tough. Pacquiao has discussed the possibility of dropping from 147 to 140, while Canelo fought his last two at 155-pounds and may go to 160-pounds in the near future.

In a more likely scenario, De La Hoya hopes to match Canelo against Cotto in the first half of next year.




The whole Mayweather Manny talks is to try t move him off his May date, team Manny wants to move down and face a can like Vargas, and Arum/Oscar wants that May date for Canelo or Cotto; but with the news of May and Cotto talks, it seems as Team May has Cotto ear; this article above is a threat to Mayweather and Cotto but more of a desperation move considering the Canelo Manny fight is un-doable to weight

Canelo is tailor made for Pacman, questionable footwork, difficulty getting foot placement against southpaws (see the Trout fight), questionable defense.
