The idea is to have a viable alternative if something catastrophic were to happen. Have multiple units ready to deploy quickly if things were to get ugly.
Yeah, the rich and the famous will probably have first dibs out, but it's a start to hopefully prolong the species if possible extinction is imminent.

I'm saying if something catastrophic, along the lines of a solar flare, cosmic ray, or asteroid happened, it would either be over before we could send units out, or take out the technology we would need to mobilize units. not true at all. we have technology right now monitoring all the above days before they happen. we are literally a decade away from colonizing. did you not see the video? we have now discovered there's water, lots of water on mars. that pretty much all we need. Mark Kelly is currently on the ISS seeing if we can plant and eat space veggies, so far the research has concluded we can. we're just about there. I dont expect some catastrophe for another thousand years yet we are sending men to mars in my life time.
