Can't possibly be much worse than Josh...
Has Nike connects...
The city's favorite son...
Will be able to recruit especially in the city...
Will fill the Forum with fans during a time when the Grizzlies are about to take a step back...
Won't demand a ridiculous contract right away...
Almost sounds like Larry Finch

Memphis and Pastner should strike a deal
Memphis and Pastner should strike a deal

0314_MASP_umbkb9.JPG

ORLANDO — Here's what should happen now. University of Memphis administrators should tell Josh Pastner they aren't going to fire him, but that they'll make up the difference in money if he gets another gig. Pastner should go get that other gig and be happy to have his millions and a fresh opportunity. Memphis should hire a new coach and start rebuilding its program.

Y'all down with that?

Good.

And, seriously, no need to thank me.

It's obvious, isn't it? Obvious to everyone who has been paying attention.

Memphis ended its season Sunday with a 72-58 loss to the University of Connecticut in the American Athletic Conference Championship game. Another quality opponent, another Memphis defeat. The program is nothing if not predictable.

So Memphis will be left out of the postseason yet again. No NCAA Tournament, and no NIT Tournament. And we could talk about whether that's a fireable offense except, well, you know the deal with Pastner's contract by now.

He'll be owed $10.6 million if he's canned. The university doesn't have that kind of money to spend. Maybe it's because they need it for the Big 12. Maybe it's because they just don't have the cash. Either way, Memphis can't simply fire him.

So the administrators have to make a deal, right?

They have to go to Pastner and tell him he's not going to get fired. But that if he is able to find another job, the university will make up the difference.

Let's say Pastner can get $1 million a year at Central Florida. Memphis would pay him the other $1.65 million a year.

Or maybe Memphis could just give him a lump-sum payment. Say, $5 million as a parting gift.

Pastner would then be free to take another gig. He wouldn't have to worry about leaving money on the table. And Memphis would be able to hire a coach to restore the program's momentum.

"But wait," you ask. "Why would Pastner take a lesser job? Didn't he recently say he expects the team to be really good next year?"

Yes, he said that. But nobody expects the team to be really good next year. And depending how things play out during the offseason, it could be a tire fire. Shaq Goodwin, Ricky Tarrant and Trahson Burrell will all be gone. And that could be just the start of it.

Dedric Lawson could well go pro. Did you see the show he put on in Orlando? When I asked him about his future after Sunday's game, he said he would "talk to my dad and see whatever he's got lined up for me."

Avery Woodson could well go gone. He'll be eligible to be a graduate transfer. When I asked him whether he expected to be back, he said, "Who knows what can happen with this program? I mean, as far as I know, I'm a Memphis Tiger right now."

Right now. As in, maybe not for long.

So, yes, Pastner could stay and collect his salary if he prefers. But why put another bad year on his resume? Beyond that, why subject himself to the misery he has endured the past two seasons? You think it's fun being Pastner these days? The man is more focused on "positivity" than any human I have ever met. Why wouldn't he want to take a job where he could actually find some?

As for Memphis, the deal is a no brainer. And it's not because Pastner is a terrible coach. It's because it's time. It's just time. Time to realize that a parting of ways is better for everyone.

Indeed, that's all I've been saying since Memphis lost to East Carolina. There comes a time when a relationship is no longer salvageable.

It doesn't matter how many wins Pastner has stacked up. It doesn't matter what his record against Top 25 opponents might be. It doesn't matter that he's a fabulous guy, or that he hasn't made it to the second weekend of the tournament, or that every national television commentator is in love with him.

Pastner deserves a chance to find happiness away from Memphis. Memphis needs an opportunity to rebuild with a new coach.

It can happen. Memphis can remove an obstacle to it happening.

Just go ahead and make the deal.

Memphis
He will be back next year... they owe him too much money. If you fire him and the school has to throw away double digit millions the people who make that decision will be fired too for drafting up the ridiculous contract.

Pastner has to find a capable big man and point guard to put next to Lawson. It really was a shame how bad the offense looked in a half court setting.

Memphis says it's sticking with Paster as coach

Memphis will make 'necessary investments' to support Josh Paster

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Memphis is sticking with coach Josh Pastner even though the school missed the NCAA Tournament for a second straight season.

University President David Rudd and athletic director Tom Bowen said in a statement Friday the school will "make the necessary investments and changes" so it can "compete at the highest level" with Pastner as coach. If Memphis fired Pastner, he would have been owed $10.6 million.

Pastner has a 167-73 record, with four NCAA Tournament bids in seven years. But the Tigers have gone a combined 37-29 without any NCAA invitations the last two seasons.

Rudd and Bowen said the men's basketball program "operates in a manner consistent with the core values of our university and community but has fallen short in our on-court performance the last two years."

Memphis went 19-15 this season and lost 72-58 to Connecticut in the American Athletic Conference championship game.

Hired by Memphis after he had packed his car to join former Tigers coach John Calipari at Kentucky in the spring of 2009, Pastner received a pay hike from $1.7 million to $2.65 million after Memphis went 31-5 in 2013 and won a game in the NCAA Tournament.

Pastner averaged more than 24 wins over his first six seasons. His 148 victories at that point made him the ninth-winningest coach in Division I history for his first six seasons. He joined Calipari as the only Memphis coaches to win 18 or more games each of his first six seasons.

Pastner also coached the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament four straight years (2011-14), something only Dana Kirk (1982-85) and Calipari (2006-09) managed at Memphis.

Memphis hasn't been back to the tournament since. The Tigers' home attendance dropped from more than 16,000 during Memphis' last NCAA Tournament season of 2013-14 to 11,812 this season.
