What went on up there? Poppers and weird sex!
There was a thread here where I shytted on the Demon King because it didn't make any sense. It was just Finn Balor in body paint and beyond that, there was nothing else. If it was just him trying to look cool, they shouldn't have tried making it into some kind of alter ego. Don't acknowledge it like when Jeff Hardy wore face paint.
If it was supposed to be a persona, develop it. Make it so that when Finn becomes the Demon King, he's more aggressive and gains strength from the paint. Kinda like early Undertaker with the urn that carried his powers, the Demon King could have been the source of Finn's powers. And only call on it for must-win, high-profile matches.
But honestly, I feel like WWE gave up on him immediately after he got injured because he was getting a Roman Reigns push the minute he got on the main roster. Of course, they would have fukked it up eventually, but at least they believed in him in the beginning. Then once he came back, it took months for him to even get a Universal Championship match, and they turned him into a smiling dork instead.

You have to give a character meaningful booking everybody isn't going to be Stone Cold Steve Austin or CM Punk be where they are gifted in the ring and have the charisma to carry promos and connect with an audience.
Like someone else said he should have made the Demon an alter ego maybe even the Demon could have been a heel version of Finn Balor and give him a different finished and persona.
The WWE could have marketed it as the Demon returns for certain matches , but nope they don't do that.
Balor and Nakamura immediately come to mind. Both guys are talented workers, but those guys need a stable behind them when they are standing in the ring with a mic or a way to draw legit heat.

It became watered-down because it got advertised seemingly every week as opposed to predictably showing up for his NXT title defenses (despite no prior warning to the matter).
It didn't matter though. Outside of him powerbombing Bobby Lashley at Mania and him flexing his muscles with his tongue out... there was never any notable difference between the Demon and Finn Balor.
At least with Bray Wyatt and the Fiend, the former is a mild-mannered sort that tries to avoid confrontation.
No it did not, I can probably count on one hand how many times he used the demon on the main roster
