This game has drawn me back in. The first chapter was great. Definitely felt like the stakes were very high during that introduction, something missing from 15.

I hope it doesn't devolve into the things I hated about FF7 remake.

This game is like a shounen anime. It's filled with anime tropes. It is a game that is obsessively focused on the main protagonist and not much else for much of it's run. Unfortunately it has one of the weakest main antagonist in the entire series. The main character is solid though. As the game gets deep into itself it begins to focus on the least interesting aspects of it and the more interesting stuff is relegated to side quests. By the end it limps to it's finish. The ending is also divisive.

This is an enjoy the journey more than the destination type games. It's like the opposite of Final Fantasy 15 where that was a weak main game with an amazing ending.

Not sure I agree with this - the series is full of so many awful antagonists that the main bad guy in this is passable in comparison.
When I say main antagonists in not speaking about the final boss which in some cases are the same. Sephiroth, Kuja, Vayne, Seymour, Ardyn, Kefka. The series in modern times has mostly had acceptable antagonists. Who felt like real characters and had personalities.

This one is on the level of Galenth Dysley or Bhunivelze. The level of antagonist has no real character and is just a stock walking God complex character bringing nothing unique to the table.

I mean, I largely agree but I feel like the bold largely sums up the vast majority of FF antagonists.

I feel for the most part he was just a background presence where the actually active villains were all really good IMO

Barnabas, Benedikta, Kupka, and the mom were all excellent IMO.

Its very good, only aspects that needed work were the sidequest and difficulty

I liked the side quests. They added to the overall feeling that I was in an actual “world”

This is the first game i’ve played since Persona 4 Golden where I felt like I NEEDED to complete all sidequests

Once
Kupka
dies the story kind of goes down imo. The whole kingdom dynamic was cool but the more of them that went down the story just became more boring.
Barnabas
went too far off the deep end and became a joke. And as much as I like the active time lore I think they relied on it too much to tell the some of the story.

Like someone said the game was fun but it definitely crawled to the finish line.

In the majority of cases, the follow up side quests were actually better their main mission counterparts. My only real complaint about it it though is that a lot of those bosses were essentially just reskins of the bounty hunts with the same movesets especially the one with

Theodore and his sister

That’s because once that happens the story begins to shift to focus on the main antagonist who sucked all the oxygen out of it.

A lot of JRPGs fall off at the end though. Persona 5 was a better game when the phantom thieves were stealing hearts than after they moved past that for example. Most of these games turn the protagonists into God slayers and that’s played out now.

even when JRPGS go for more “mature” westernized-GOT inspired stories they still end with killing god with the power of friendship
