It's probably one of the least popular ones since VII came out though. I liked it but many people skipped over it because the PS2 was out and others didn't like how slow it played.The game was already too goofy and cartoony

I would kill for a new ff game that took the series back to its roots like this one did
The chibi style after 7 & 8 probably had a lot to do with that
If they followed up 8 with a game similar to Vagrant Story and Tactics in tone, it would have appealed to more
