I just thought of something:
You mentioned it was 70's to 80's and you saw it as a kid.
You're assuming it was a movie, but could it have just been some TV Episode? There's HUNDREDS of different mystery shows from that period it could be (Columbo, Heart to Heart, Remington Steele, etc.)

I'm almost certain it was a movie but my mind is so cloudy about everything except that scene that it could have been an episode of a old TV show..... :yeshrug:
