I haven't commented too much on this but lets be real folks... Brown parents failed him. I thought this was simply a friendly kid that didn't have a record or get in trouble but even if he didn't he was well on his way based on that video. And now that his friend admitted he did in fact steal from the store and act reckless in front of the clerk it destroys one of the major defense angles that he was good nonviolent kid. Sure you can get technical and say the two incidents are not related but in reality it does bring into question his temperament.

Every eye witness said brown and the officer got into a scuffle before he was shot running away... nothing justifies the cops actions BUT we already know how cops treat black men when given a reason. Brown should have known that too.. His parents never instilled in him that as a black man in America you are always a target. If you give them an inch they will take a foot. I'm glad my pops schooled me on this early. You never let your guard down or get comfortable in this racist white mans country. The deck is stacked against black men and we don't get second chances. I'm not saying its right, I'm not saying its fair, but at some point blacks gotta realize we are living behind enemy lines... until that changes we cant be complacent. I was taught this and I thank my parents every day cause I didn't fall into the traps many other kids did thinking they were free. The laws are not made for us. Michael browns actions that day indicate he was sleeping and unfortunately his wake up call cost him his life. So yeah after all is said and done, the cop hopefully may still be found guilty.. but brown will still be dead. That's not justice..

My mom beat it into me that I was not supposed to touch anything in the store. Whenever we shopped I'd see kids everywhere picking up cereal and asking their parents to buy it, but I didn't touch shyt unless my mom specifically told me to put something in the basket, or else I'd get punished.

Likewise my parents told me to keep my hands on the steering wheel if a cop pulled me over, and they instilled a fear that police would kill me if I didn't something mundane like reaching to turn down the radio. There was a thread earlier where some posters called this mentality weak...but it helped keep me alive, and I'll tell my son to do the same.

I'm not blaming Brown. Yet I can't help but think that this situation is essentially what my parents - and many other black parents - tell their kids will happen if they break the law or give a cop reason to believe they broke the law.

It's depressing thinking about how I've been trained to think of myself as a potential victim, and to focus on making sure cops don't have a reason to shoot me.

The legal system is weird man. Competence in the courtroom is only one factor in being a lawyer for a high profile case. Johnny Cochran or Gloria Allred may be like a B- in the actual trial, but the lawyers that are an A+ rating in trial don't have they stats up in other categories. Like Johnny Cocrhan was an A+ in media exposure, an A+ in community solidarity, branding his client's message... all sorts of stuff the no-name lawyers can't do.

When the Treyvon Martin lawyer calls a press conference all the networks are showing up. He has connections just cause of his profile that have nothing to do with him being a good lawyer simply cause people know him.
