Little Africa is located in the northern corner of Spartanburg County, South Carolina in the Foothills Mountain Region. It's near Campobello, Inman, Boling Springs and Landrum, SC. It's also near Polk County and Green Creek, NC. Established by freed slaves Simpson Foster and Emmanuel Waddell in the mid 1800s. The owners combined 300 acres of land to form Little Africa. It is noted in history that Little Africa became so popular that other blacks in the area began to purchase land that bordered the all black community causing the boundaries to extend. In fact, just like the rest of South Carolina, Little Africa was known for its prosperity as a thriving force in black culture of that day. So much so that George Washington Carver himself took notice of Little Africa and recommended the progressive community to Julius Rosenwald; President, Sears, Roebuck Company as a site for one of the first “Rosenwald Schools” in the nation.

Armed with financial independence and an education system in place; the black citizens of Little Africa and surrounding counties outnumbered whites and soon began to exercise their voting rights. Many of whom changed political parties and from 1870 to 1876 South Carolina reports that six African Americans were elected and served as U. S Congressman; the highest for any of the southern states. Needless to say, many were not happy with the progress of blacks in the upstate following the emancipation of slaves and set out to regain pre-Civil War control. White citizens criticized blacks for being too “uppity and insubordinate” and made claims that black were “speaking out of turn”. Soon white citizens of the upstate begin to form militias to terrorize blacks. This dogmatic approach by whites to force blacks back into a slave mentality came to a head in October 1876 and today is recognized in the Top 10 Race Riots in American history as the Laurens County Race Riot of 1876.

Montesano escaped in the officer’s patrol car eventually dumping it at his grandmother’s house in Hialeah – before fleeing in her blue Volvo

As the car was wedged helplessly between a light pole and a tree, nearly a minute passed before officers opened up – firing approximately 50 bullets at the car and the two unarmed men inside the vehicle.

The two men inside the car survived that initial volley of gunfire, according to witnesses, who said they could see the men moving inside the Volvo. Everything went quiet for nearly two minutes before the officers opened up a second time – unleashing an unrelenting torrent of bullets that lasted almost 25 seconds. By the time it was over, the two men inside the car were dead.


And in fact, as CBS4 News was the first to report, both men inside the Volvo were unarmed at the time police caught up with them. All of the gunfire came from police.

But what police didn’t realize before they started shooting at the Volvo is there was a second man in the car – Corsini Valdes – who had committed no crime.
