go for it.

have a blast

you just discovered something nobody ever though about. I wonder why they kill off all those sick animals when infections spread over populations. it should just be a free bbq :wow:

:gucci: you can get infected just doing the meal prep/ handling the meat

why risk that? you will have to touch blood and bodily fluids on a kill at some point if you tryna prep it, skin it etc...

Bro people kill and eat them here in the states and other places. You just have to be careful and wear gloves and maybe goggles when butchering them. The only reason authorities and companies don't give away meat when they fall sick is to avoid getting lawsuits from people who won't handle the meat properly or under cook it.

Most wild animals carry deseases and by hunting them you always at risk to catch something from one but it don't stop people from hunting. you just have to be careful when handling the raw meat.

The authorities there just don't want all types of people who don't know what they are doing running out killings pigs to eat and getting sick. I bet there are hunter types down there feasting off them hogs though

Didn’t think about that tbh. Good point. Having said that, the article made it seem like they were radioactive.

The problem started about five years ago after people began buying the pigs as pets without knowing they would grow to weigh 250 pounds or more.

Ppl are just dumb

Thats not true.

honestly the real reason is because of the hurricane two years ago. People left, just abandoned whatever livestock they had left that had survived. You’re not flying with a pig with you to the United States and its an invasive species on the island so it was a perfect recipe for this unfortunately.

I’m not correcting you specifically. I know that the article said that, but i’m saying the article is kind of wrong. I mean, that’s definitely how they ended up there in the first place. But this definitely blew up after the hurricane as opposed to prior with all sort of wildlife (that wildlife that made it out alive).

In Texas you can pay to hunt them with high caliber guns from a helicopter. I have no doubt someone will start that same business over there

island is super poor for a variety of reasons...win/win? open up the island to international hunters with dogs with a bounty paid on each pig. plenty of kennels out there that hunt wild pigs that will travel for work/sport.they will spend locally in the economy+ small fee to hunt.

best believe backwood ricans are feasting off these animals...those with knowledge of how to butcher wild game will be okay...those who dont will get sick for sure. its popular down south in the USA...wouldnt be any different in the mountains of the island.

Above the fray.
Guys

The article doesn't make it clear, but the species of pigs running wild over there isnt the same as the wild boar hybrid that's been running wild in Texas, among other places.

I posted the pictures of the PR swine to point out that they are different. The feral pigs in the Southwest of mainland USA look like this.

Bigger, more aggressive, and several generations deep here.

Article was written by Danica Coto, she's been covering Puerto Rico and Latin America for years.
