(Reuters) - U.S. law enforcement authorities have shut down Silk Road, the web marketplace for illegal drugs like heroin and cocaine as well as criminal activities including murder for hire, and arrested its alleged owner, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said on Wednesday.

The FBI arrested Silk Road owner Ross William Ulbricht, 29, known as "Dread Pirate Roberts," in San Francisco on Tuesday, according to court filings.

Federal prosecutors in New York charged Ulbricht with one count each of narcotics trafficking conspiracy, computer hacking conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy, according to the filing.

"Silk Road has emerged as the most sophisticated and extensive criminal marketplace on the Internet today," FBI agent Christopher Tarbell said in the criminal complaint. According to Tarbell, the site was used by "several thousand drug dealers" to sell "hundreds of kilograms of illegal drugs."

The site, which had operated since early 2011, also offered tutorials on hacking ATM machines, contact lists for black market connections and counterfeiters, and guns and hit men for sale, according to the charges.

Authorities also seized $3.6 million worth of digital currency Bitcoin, which was used instead of cash or credit cards to complete transactions on Silk Road. The charges against Ulbricht said his website generated sales of more than 9.5 million Bitcoins, roughly equivalent to $1.2 billion.

The raid on Wednesday was not the first time the U.S. government has made arrests related to Silk Road. Earlier this year, authorities in South Carolina arrested Eric Daniel Hughes, who used Silk Road under the name Casey Jones, and charged him in state court with drug possession. The Drug Enforcement Agency seized units of the digital currency Bitcoin, which Hughes allegedly used to purchase drugs from the online market.

Bitcoins, which have been around since 2008, first came under scrutiny by law enforcement officials in mid-2011 after media reports surfaced linking the digital currency to Silk Road.

sucks for the owner though honestly, best wishes to him in his battle
Nah dude fukk him. I know a dude or two who had used the site and gotten great results but he was a straight psychopath. Check out the dialogue in the warrant:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24373759

DPR sent a message to "redandwhite" stating that "FriendlyChemist" is "Causing me problems" and adding: "I would like to put a bounty on his head if it's not too much trouble for you. What would be an adequate amount to motivate you to find him?" And then Later that same day, redandwhite sent DPR a message quoting him a price of $150,000 or $300,000 "depending on how you want it done" - "clean" or "non-clean"
DPR responded: "Don't want to be a pain here, but the price seems high. Not long ago, I had a clean hit done for $80k. Are the prices you quoted the best you can do? I would like this done ASAP as he is talking about releasing the info on Monday.
DPR and redandwhite agreed upon a price of 1,670 Bitcoins - approximately $150k - for the job. In DPR's message confirming the deal, DPR included a transacation record reflecting the transfer of 1,670 Bitcoins to a certain Bitcoin address.

Thought about copping some bud and edibles, but smartened up. A site that big was living on borrowed time.
A friend of mine once copped a tin of hash oil and a fake ID from there a couple years back when he was in college. It came vacuum sealed in a jar of pickles surrounded in food and the ID was professionally placed in the sole of a shoe. He didn't regret the purchase.

shyt is real out there :demonic:, but the feds have started to cut down on all the :demonic: shyt going on the deep web it seems. It was a matter of time really though.

Well, that and they had some cool shyt that you just couldn't cop anywhere, like that oil. Or at least, not that my friend would have been able to get. Plus, no dealing with.....dealers, and the feedback system made it supposedly easy to tell who the feds doing a bait were. So..

He got caught because he was sloppy not because of TOR

The feds found all his emails and youtube postings from when he was originally trying to hype the site years ago. That's the probable cause they needed.

All in all dude was reckless as fukk doing that Forbes interview because it egged the feds on even AFTER Homeland Security came to his front door and asked him why all these Fake IDs had his photo and name on it....and that was in JULY.
