Wouldnt that just mean the assumption the police officer is making would be a correct one? Certain things trigger a level of suspicion...of any race.

If one is driving with their hat turned backwards with the windows down and music high is more likely to be pulled over than an old lady doing the speed limit.

The problem with the program as it currently exists, is the disproportionate targeting of minorities. The numbers clearly lay out that White people should be targeted more and minorities less. Whats the explanation for this? Are the cops just better at picking out White criminality or are the majority of White people getting a pass?

The program was designed for high crime areas in NYC and unfortunately the highest areas of crime are highly populated with minorities...so hence the numbers skewing in that direction. This is what it is on the surface....why those areas have more violent crime is a totally different convo....but the program in itself was designed to keep the non criminals safe by targeting suspicious folks prior to them committing a crime. Bloomberg and the NYPD were obviously willing to stop and frisk innocent folks at the expense of everyone.

I think it's naive to rely on statistics about minority areas having higher crime incidences when wealthier areas tend to have people committing those same crimes that Stop n Frisk tactics are supposed to be addressing. The stats already show that Whites are more likely to be carrying a concealed weapon or drugs. I'd argue from personal experience that "nicer" areas are under-policed compared to Black and Latino communities. A direct result of this under-policing and 'slap on the wrist' justice that the more affluent can afford is that they are underrepresented in crime statistics that determine where criminal activity is taking place. They get charges thrown out. They get their criminal records expunged. They get lighter sentences and do community service instead of jail time. Their high school or college buries the case before it reaches a court room. If the police want to catch drug dealers they'd do just as well or better by stopping bike messengers and college students.

SON...you asked how do we get guns out the hand of unlicensed owners...

I just told you...by attacking the problem from the root...these guns are getting sold by gun owners and gun stores...both might be equally culpable...but that wasn't your question....

it was how do we solve this problem...and I just explained it to you...and that was the best you could come up with.....:wtf:

Law enforcement officials announced the largest single seizure of firearms in New York City's history today, as well as the arrest of 19 people who were allegedly involved in smuggling the weapons from North and South Carolina by way of cheap Chinatown buses. At a press conference today, Mayor Bloomberg was quick to note that the investigation, which netted 254 guns, was successful because of New York's tough gun laws, the undercover officer involved, and "smart, proactive policing…that includes stop, question, and frisk."

Bloomberg and NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly made the link to stop-and-frisk because of a conversation between two of the defendants picked up by the Manhattan DA's wiretaps. Earl Campbell, one of the men who allegedly ferried weapons from South Carolina by Chinatown bus, refused to leave the bus drop off point at Grand and Chrystie Streets with his payload for fear of being stopped by police.

"I can't leave until you come cause I can't take them…to my house, to my side of town cause I'm umm, I'm inBrownsville," Campbell allegedly told his accomplice. "So we got like, we got like umm, uh, whatchamacalit, stop and frisk."

Mayor Bloomberg noted, "Stop, question, and frisk…has taken some 8,000 guns off the streets in the past decade," without elaborating that the tactic's overall success rate for retrieving weapons is 0.1%. Most of those guns were found outside of stop-and-frisk hot spots such as Brownsville.

In 2011, police recovered 780 after making 684,330 stops in New York City, while this year-long investigation yielded 254 guns.

Bridget Brennan, the Special Narcotics Prosecutor, said that the gun-running scheme was discovered in the course of a drug investigation. Authorities allege that the two gun-running outfits, one from South Carolina, the other from North Carolina, were united in their middleman from Brooklyn, Omole Adedji.

According to a criminal complaint, Adedji would arrange for North Carolina resident Walter Walker to sell the guns at a friend's "rap studio" on Atlantic Avenue in Ocean Hill; the undercover officer bought 116 guns for $82,000 from Walker over the course of fourteen different meetings. Authorities say Walker, who began traveling to New York by Chinatown bus and later by car, also made the largest sale of the bust: 14 guns for $9,700.

Campbell, Adedji's South Carolina connection, allegedly sold 90 guns to the undercover officer for nearly $75,000.

The 254 seized guns, including several assault weapons and one fully automatic Cobray 9mm machine gun with a 30-round magazine, came from various places: some were legally purchased, some were straw purchases, while 36 others were stolen. Most of the guns arrived loaded.

An associate of Campbell's allegedly texted him regarding the importance of selling loaded guns: "wats tha point of a gun if u ain't got tha ammo mite as well get a stick." Another text message referred to bullets as "cop killers."

Brennan, the special prosecutor, referred to the demeanor of the defendants as alternatively "horrifying and comical."

In one instance, Campbell and an associate allegedly attempted to assemble a Norinco SKS assault rifle from parts contained in a zebra-striped suitcase on the streets of Chinatown. The associate consulted a YouTube video on their smartphone before the undercover officer told them he'd take the weapon in pieces.

The 19 defendants face multiple counts of conspiracy and criminal sale of a firearms—Campbell alone faces up to 25 years in prison. You can read more on the investigation and the individual defendants here [PDF].

are you really this naive???

They found those guns by following a rapper who basically drew attention to himself on youtube

This has nothing to do with Stop and Frisk

better yet if you follow the story ..the guy was buying guns from a connect in South Carolina...this wont stop more guns from getting on the streets..how about making it tougher for these guns to enter nyc...how come police had no clue dudes were using buses to transport guns????

So basically the largest gun bus in nyc history was due to a dumb youtube rapper bringing attention to his himself??? :wtf:

What did stop n frisk do to stop these dudes from bring guns by bus in the first place???

Yeah clown...but did you even read the story and just post shyt??

if the first guy didn't draw attention to himself those guns would be on the street....more has to be done about guns entering nyc ...PERIOD ..this LUCKY bust just doesn't cut it...

the police instead of setting up regular civilians to buy stolen items and harassing ppl based on the color of their skin and violating the principals that this country was built on how about they figure out how these guns keep getting into the city...how about they do something proactive for once
