My comments in here are strictly within the context of the show, a show that all types of people consider to be a classic, and the character Archie played on it, if you have a problem with that you can either deal with it or put me on ignore. I actually enjoy the show I think it’s genius

My only point is that u said that some black people in this thread are letting “race cloud their vision”

It’s impossible to not let race play in our everyday lives for all people across the world...especially for black people so for u to suggest that our vision is clouded is to ignore how the vision became clouded in the first place and even worse the purveyors of the cloudy vision

I know criticism of the Urkel character and if he was a c00n or not is nothing close to a one sided debate, but I'll just say that "act" just wasn't my cup of tea. We can agree to disagree and fine by me.

They may have been upstaged by Walker, but the fact is Will Smith had acting chops as evidenced by his post-FPOBA run. What did Walker ever do after Good Times to justify him shining over Rolle & Amos? They were actual actors, Walker was a funny guy who could make a living off of being a goof ball and physical comedy. Kinda like how Michael Richards' Kramer stole the spotlight on Seinfeld during its run, but the character who's endured the most afterwards is Jason Alexander's George. Why? Because Alexander is a legit actor while Richards is a one note comedian who obviously can't hold anything together if he doesn't have the right character written for him. And this was the case before Richards' wild out affair at The Laugh Factory that ended his career.

Amos has had role after role since James was killed off, Rolle's legacy as an actress is the stuff of legends. Walker will always and only be: "JJ and, um... Ann Coulter's boyfriend?"

And that's why I can't rock with your GT to FP comparison too much. Smith deserved his ascension for playing a normal dude in a coming of age story. Walker did not for running around and flailing his arms like some traveling minstrel show.

I had just never heard Urkel character being called a sambo or minstrel.Was interested to hear it.
The criticism of JJ's character that ER made.....that he was jobless, irresponsible...apply to Will also....
The final episode has Will clueless as to what he's going to do as the entire family has future plans.
Note that both characters didn't start their series being that way.
The same way Will's antics played perfectly against the foil....either Carlton or Uncle Phil...JJ was best playing comic relief against the strong straight man..and real actor...James Evans...When the father left, and no character strong enough to play against....it was too much.

*By the way..once they did the Carlton goes to the hood episode..and made him funny instead of stiff (pause)..Carlton was THE funniest character on that show

Be objective and compare JJ's character with Will Smith's character on Fresh Prince...mid series...
Smith's character doesn't stand out as much because he's in an affluent setting. but they aren't much different.


And much like the professional rivalries that developed on FP, I think John Amos and Esthere Rolle didn't like being upstaged by the novice actor.......Jimmie Walker.

She did have some valid criticisms of his character though.

You make a solid point... but eras and context mean everything....

Put Uncle Phil and Wil in the 70s and Uncle Phil May have felt the same way as James
