This whole argument is kinda weak, to me.

Far from a Bruno Mars fan, but Mark Ronson said this track was an homage to songs that he grew up on and loved back in the day. He's a DJ. He said that he wanted to salute his favorite period in music by putting this track together. It's not like dude is acting like he played all these instruments himself. He straight up said he took these parts and wanted to make something that reminded him of back in the day.

He's sampling. This is pop music, so I get the hate, but Hip Hop was birthed on doing the exact same thing. Peep older EPMD credits. Erick would take 4-5 different records that were mad popular in the 70's and make a track off samples that everyone knew. This is really no different. I know it's a Bruno Mars joint, but it's all the same shyt that's been done in music forever. The rules don't change because this is some pop shyt. LOL!!

The original rough version of Uptown Funk was a mashup featuring All Gold Everything that Bruno Mars performed on tour and they decided to make into a record. They gave him a writing credit because the song is basically built around Trindads song. That one hit wonder is about to cake.

Who in the fukk 5 stared this trash ass thread

Do I really need to sit and watch an 11 minute video about a song that is BLATANTLY an homage/throwback to shyt like classic motown and other heavy hitters in the funk genre? That seems to be the whole point of the record...I mean listen to the joint with Mystikal on the album, how long of a video do you need to make to be like "if you stop the track at 3.17 you can clearly tell he's ripping off James Brown"....

We gonna pretend like funk doesn't share a variety of signature sounds - ie the funk? Simar to how blues has a distinct song structure?

As a hip hop fan it's very hard for me to take arguments like this seriously. Music is a melting pot now. Samples changed the game.

To be honest - Uptown Funk is clearly a Funk inspired song. It is very obvious but to me it's homage rather than biting. It is called Uptown Funk after all. And the video is clearly meant to mirror the funk era.

But as hip-hop culture we've grown up hearing about how sampling is unoriginal and that we have to break bread as a result. And the laws are inherently unfair. You now have to break bread for replaying a song, or replaying a song but changing various elements and still breaking some bread.

But using the rules the CAC's created in the 80's / 90's to get money from Biz Markie et al. you look back... The Beatles, Elvis and all these cac artists and bands cited by mainstream media as GOATS - by those rules certain songs they must break bread.

This isn't even the song I was thinking of

Todays standards they gotta cut that cheque.

The only issue I have with Uptown Funk is that it's derivative. But that's Ronson's schtik right now. He's got another hard Funk track where Mystikal is doing his best James Brown impression.

I just find it hilarious that the kiss FMs and other top 40 stations play this shyt to death. We all know damn well if raaphael Shaadiq made this he wouldn't get the time of day. And the cacs loving this song have no idea about morris day, cameo, etc. Take nothing away from Mars. Hes a great artist but we know whata going on here :mjpls:
