You amahara?
Somali "Ogadeni" aka Somali Ethiopian from Dhagaaxbuur.

What happened between 1991-2004 in Ethiopia's economy? I'm sure it was growing... at like at least 5 per cent (which is bad for a developing country but whatever)
Overall it finished in positive growth rate over those years, but nothing substantial was done on the economic front from reform or real infrastructure development. Much like many other African country, the Chinese boom “saved” these government and gave them false economic rhetoric. So the criticism isn’t limited to Ethiopia.

Compare Syria to Ethiopia. Before the 2011 War started in Syria. Assad government paid of Syria’s debt, grew the economy, improved living standards, undertook major infrastructure and Syria was liberal, peaceful and had HDI which considered them medium human development. Ethiopia isn’t even near Syria’s development, yet, Syrians were willingly to destroy or at least fight bitterly because of political and some economic grievances. It truly goes to show you how low the bar is set for these African governments, Ethiopians are basically be told by “some” to be happy with mediocrity, maybe that is why many are fleeing the country for a better life in Europe.

Unless actual root of the issues are solved, I wouldn’t be surprised if a full blown war happens.

OG wa rageedi :myman:

Ahhh my pops is from jigjiga yall gotta handle that liyu police btw :camby:
ONLF messed up completely in 93 trusting the TPLF and being burnt badly. I truly hope the ESPDP have plans post-TPLF which I sadly doubt. Fat boy has seem to place all his bets on TPLF. Feel like us Somalis in Ethiopia are choosing the wrong side again and lacking foresight again since our great grandfathers who were outconned by the BRITISH :snoop:

However, Ethiopia's GDP growth rate is continuing at a fast pace even after the Chinese slow down. Surely, macroeconomic policies by the EPRDF are contributing to this growth? I'd also add that Kenya is growing at 5.9 per cent or so...it's possible that it's a mixture of some macroecnomic good stuff while not being dependent on oil or major mineral resources like copper.

What's the difference? Different colonial pasts? Religion?
I think its due to language

Biher-tigrinya people in Eritrea speak pure Tigrinya. The tigrays from ethiopia speak amaharic with broken tigrinya. But im not sure this is what my eritrean friend told me

I think China definitely helped a lot on the infrastructure side to boost economic development. There was a school of thought in Africa with regards to which developmental model suits the continent best. Many African leaders and commentators openly admired the Chinese model of heavy state involvement in economic growth and some form of benevolent dictatorship (see Rwanda) over freeing some democratic space and using a more market based system. These theories confused or even misunderstood the differences between China and many African states. Chinese political stability was not an ever present feature of the country and their economic growth was not only manifest through impressive GDP numbers but also filtered down to reduce poverty at a fast clip. Even the CCP felt some internal pressure from citizens to loosen up a bit. Many African leaders think democracy is the problem not their inability to deliver growth and also forget that political stability achieved without buy in from the people is tenuous and fragile.
