From previous layoffs, I'd imagine that they want these talents taking televisions/front facing gigs elsewhere as it's less money that they have to pay out from the remainder of their deal.

Kellerman is probably doing the same thing that Beadle did in just collecting the paychecks as they'll still be in sort of demand even when those contracts expire.

Depending on how many years he has left on his deal and with him likely being in high demand, I'd imagine that Lowe won't have to sit out like that unless it's his choice.
Right, Marcellous Wiley said Max is sitting at home collecting a check by choice. Keyshawn Johnson would be doing the same thing if Undisputed/Fox didnt come knocking.

No one is going to miss Zach. Long form articles especially sports have been dead for a long time and he didn't really bring anything to ESPN TV. ESPN got enough white NBA analysts that do what Zach does and more. Tim Legler does play by play and has a prime spot on the Van Pelt Sportscenter after every ESPN/ABC game. Windhorst drives interest and does every major show regularly (Get Up, FT, SC, NBA Today). Bontemps actually reports from games and does TV.

Does ESPN even make a percentage off his podcast? I always assumed the podcasts are a side hustle. Like I don't think Fox was making anything off of Shannon Sharpe's podcast.

If Lowe is getting 7 figures, I want to know what Perkins is getting because his role was similar to Lowe's. They were on the same shows together.

Bill Simmons has always said ESPN didn't know what they were doing with podcasts so I doubt that much has changed since he left. Perk actually does prime time studio work both on ESPN and ABC. Zach never filled in for Wilbon or Jalen for example on Countdown or showed up on SC after a big game. He only did The Jump/NBA Today and would randomly show up on Get Up a few times a season. They gave him that big contract to keep him away from The Ringer originally and the other failed networks when they were popping up (FS1, NBC Sports, etc).

I don’t know how ESPN does the podcasts for their employees but I just assumed it would be included in their contracts

ESPN sells ads for podcasts so they make some money on those podcasts.

Zach Lowe had a weekly column on ESPN.com and it was behind a paywall which I'm sure helped drive some ESPN+ subscriptions but it's tough to tell how many because there's so much behind that ESPN+ paywall. There's boxing, MMA events, select MLB games, other columnists articles.

When you consider he has nearly 1 million twitter followers, he was probably well worth his salary.....given the quality of his work, what he did on TV and podcasts. I think Disney probably wants someone working more for that 7 figures tho.

Somehow Stephen A Smith still has a job.

ESPN isn't a sports company.
They're TMZ.

They are a business and Stephen A brings in a lot of revenue. It's a huge loss for good basketball discourse but ESPN stopped caring about that long time ago when Skip and Stephen A started ascending. Lowe will do much better on an online only type of company like The Ringer where he can focus on basketball and writing.

His podcast is posted to the NBA on ESPN YouTube Channel.

ESPN probably owns it
