The Level of disrespect being Shown to Shaq is absurd. I dislike dude a LOT but he's clearly the best #1 draft pick during that period. Dude won 4 NBA championships and people actually consider him an underachiever, that's how dominant that nikka was.

what year did he win one of those titles with the team that drafted him?

Is THAT the question being asked? Is it about who was the best for that particular team or who was the best overall?

If it's overall it's Shaq

If it's the best for the team that drafted them it's Duncan

if we are discussing "best number 1 pick" why would their accomplishments for other teams that didnt draft them be relevant

so of those people on the board, i think its very hard to say anyone is higher than Duncan cuz most everyone regards him as the #1 player at his position in the _history_ of the NBA so, then that gives us

1) Duncan

Then we got shaq, i can remember how dominant that fool was, his only achilles heel was the freethrows (which has been a problem for lots of big men), so IMHO, that's

2) Shaq

Then this is more so just a personal favorite player.. AI did so much with so little and you just gotta respect the way he played so for my money..

3) AI

Then I guess you gotta put lebron up there.. he's still young and plenty more of his story to be written

4) LBJ

finally if this is going all the way back to 85 (like the graphic, and _NOT_ the title of the thread), my last one of top 5 would be Ewing, I remember him in college and basically he woulda had a title if not for one Michael "Air" Jordan, who ended up cockblockin' a lot of great NBA legends... so ya then..

5) Ewing

All it asks is who were the best #1 picks since '85. There's no mention of best #1 pick that stayed with their team the longest. With that being said, there is no way in hell Iverson is ahead of Ewing or Robinson.

To Absolut, Kobe was the 13th pick, but he was drafted by Charlotte. Would that make him null and void if we were discussing best 13th picks?

yes, because he obviously did nothing for the hornets. no one says "man what great value the hornets found at the 13 pick with kobe." at least with shaq and bron, the teams got elite play from that player for a handful of years, but not enough to leapfrog their value over duncan, robinson, iverson, and ewing with their respective teams picking them number 1. would i rather have shaqs career than ewing? of course. would i rather have shaqs magic career over ewings knicks career? hell no

If weren't not even considering their accomplishments with other teams then why is Dwight not even being mentioned?

Shaq was with Orlando for 4 years and while he was successful during that time Dwight has been more success during his time with Orlando (albeit a longer stint). Hell even in them both leaving Dwight will be better for Orlando than Shaq since they'll actually get something in return for Dwight instead of him just walking as a free agent.

dwight is certainly in the discussion, just not in the top 5 discussion. shaqs value to orlando was >>> dwights imo. shaq turned them from expansion to contender virtually overnight. id put dwight the 7th best number 1 pick since 1985, and its hardly chopped liver that are ahead of him. asking "who is the best player to be picked 1st" and "what was the best 1st pick" are 2 different discussions. one of geared to the individual success, the other is geared to the teams returns with that pick. is kobe the best player to be picked 13th? no question. was he the best 13th pick? not even close

Sure he was. Not his fault the Hornets traded him for Vlade Divac. Just like it's not Dirk's fault he was traded to Dallas for Tractor Traylor and a pick :dead:

1. Shaq (too dominate. Go look at that man numbers)
2. Duncan (consistent, defense, arguably best pf)
3. Bron (most talented since Jordan, stat filler, champion)
4. D Rob ( very skilled, hof)
5. AI ( heart, great scorer)

We're not gonna stop disrespecting Bron huh....ok...i'm wasting my time, but fukk it....

Tell me, what would Cleveland Cavalier basketball have been from 2003-2010 if they hadn't taken Bron #1?

The value of the franchise went through the roof. They had seasons with the best record. The went to the Finals for the first time in franchise history. Individually, LeBron won an MVP and a scoring title. .....Basically, he put them on the map.

It's not a coincidence that ESPN is asking this question right now.

No #1 did more for a franchise than LeBron.

2) Duncan
3) O'Neal
4) Rose
5) Howard/Iverson

I agree with this...except I'd put AI 4th and Admiral 5th
