Above the fray.
What happened to the Black sitcoms of the 90s is what happened to the Black films of the early to mid 70s. Literally, the exact same thing..

The difference is that whereas the 70s films SAVED the major film studios, the 90s era tv shows helped create and sustain the new tv networks. In both cases, once the companies got their financial footing, they moved on to something else.

Sex in the City might be even more flagarant.

Carrie is writer; Khadija has a magazine
Miranda is a lawyer; Max is a lawyer
Samantha is fashionable and dates around; Regine is fashionable and dates around
Charlotte is ditzy; Sinclair is ditzy.

SATC ended up with two movies while we hope TLS cast get together for a reunion photo.

to be fair Living Single was based off of The Golden Girls....

but yeah this genration talks about the importance of representation as if we werent represented for like 20 years before now. What does it accomplish if we arent the ones writing the checks and greenlighting things. COnstant Cycle.

bro have some fukking class. If his pops rocked with Dr. King, show respect to his legacy and move on without your ignorant identity politics that mean NOTHING to what shorty was talking about in the video.

it's a larger point going on.

Breh, entertainment has NEVER worked like that

Wayans Brother got cancelled because as they got more poppin', they wanted a raise and WB was like :mjlol: :mjpls:

Larry Wilmore (Writer on the show) said Bernie Mac was critically acclaimed and popular and they tried to shut it down while Arrested Development had horrible ratings and they rebooted that bullshyt

Most of all the black movies made in the 80's and 90's were low low budget and had high returns and even if they didn't do big in the box office, because the music industry was still poppin', the soundtrack probaly went platinum or gold

I'm not sayin' it's not racism

Because white people do not value black audiences

But, it's more complex than old white gathered in a dark room to ruin black TV--we didn't own shyt. And that's why I hate that "We are the coolest people in the world--every one follows us"

No, we're exploited very well and if we ask for power we get squash

Seth Rogan, Will Ferrall, Will Smith and Adam Sandler keep pumping out bullshyt because they have friends in high places

Fixed one thing; everything else perfect.

What she says at 2:35 is pretty powerful too

there was a systematic racist attitude that pulled ALL positive black imagery off television...

for all these new nikkas that say people are hating and shyt just sucked or whatever need to wake their asses up

they did the same thing to black music

I said the same thing in music about Public Enemy. At one point, their music was in mainstream movies and scared white America shytless. Now these old school "Hip Hop heads" do their best to erase Public Enemy from existence from Hip Hop. :mjpls:

A Different World got the same treatment.

Another show that was marginalized and almost forgotten by Black People. Its like they want all positive images of black folk wiped out and erased from the history books. If it was to CAC media and c00ns telling Hip Hop, there would be NWA, Death Row Tupac, BIG, portion of Wu Tang, and anything from Jay-Z forward. They would forget about KRS One, Public Enemy, Rakim, X-Clan, Nas, and so forth.

Same for television. They would erase Living Single, A Different World, Cosby Show, and so on from history books.

Eh, Not buying it.

I know there was a media consolidation that took place in the early 2000’s that affected music and television

but why not replace them with what we (black folks) were accustom to already?

hire the same writers again? keep the formula going?

seriously. somebody higher up either said they weren't interested in this, they didn't get it, or they were tired of the positive imagery <<< it's one of these three.

and I posted on here years ago about that dj that felt the Telecommunications act of 1995 was enacted to counter the million man march

we organized like that without any mainstream support or endorsements - it was all through black radio and that scared white people in power.

think about it: the system was working just fine before, SOMETHING happened to make them want to change :francis:

Change to dumb down the masses

in the George W. Bush era, a lot more negativity and ignorance was flooded. Stupider acts blew up with less articulation and skill, whether in acting or in black music, and was pushed to make the upcoming generation (90s and 00s babies) stupid and superficial. That was when reality TV shows written by that c00nette Mona Scott-Young got popular and written intelligent shows got pushed off from the air altogether.
