It's not healthy to be at home all day everyday even if you work there. Your not getting enough movement, socialization or stimulation and you need to replace that social interaction and basic physical activity or your physical and mental health with eventually be affected. It doesn't even take long.

Work from home should not mean sir your ass down all day in the house.

Another aspect that people didn't account for with office buildings being empty, is that there is an entire eco-system of people who were dependent on those buildings for their employment.

janitorial,security,delivery,food service etc.
Yeah it really does suck for most of them. Additionally many of the companies here lost business:

There is far less need of childcare for example.

Like she and many other people in the replies to the tweet said though: make those buildings affordable housing and those other ecosystem jobs like the ones you mentioned: security, janitorial, food services, delivery, etc. would be thriving again.

If covid wasn't still a thing, I'd be the first person shouting for office buildings to come back. But the fact is that we are still in a pandemic that has been killing on average 1800 ppl per week in 2024.

We better not see a bailout.

Let them own it.

You want some of that money back?

Make cheap housing.

In all honesty a lot of buildings could renovate and turn offices into communal living spaces/shared family spaces with shared eating and bathrooms but individual living units and make a killing. They could make it affordable and they’d have no shortage of people willing to live (especially somewhere like San Francisco) :yeshrug:

But they won’t :francis:

If you gave incentive for them to make affordable housing, you'd see tons of NIMBY's talking about how they don't want housing projects or lower income people,crime/overall undesirables where they live.

and with how housing works in America, you'd also see the eventual upwards creep of rent because we've just accepted that things have to go up every year despite no empirical evidence that it should've increased.

Doordash or ubereats can bring you your food.

Amazon can bring you your goods.

You can stay home and avoid covid, flu, measles, mass shootings.

You can work at home on your Peloton with your virtual trainer.

What is there to worry about?

I mentioned in the suburbs thread that gentrification is cyclical. Once downtown office buildings close surrounding shops and restaurants will follow because the foot traffic is much lower. “Luxury” apartments will likely be affordable housing. Most housing developments were born out of white flight.

Also as younger people get older and have families they transition out of city living.
