Then tear them shyts down and make better use of it. The purpose of an office building is for tenants to pay rent to then make profits. If the tenants for office aren’t there then the only other choices are convert, or go out of business :manny:

Converting basically solves are artificial housing shortage problem and breathes life back into struggling inner cities.

Have you ever seen the logistics of demolishing buildings with other large buildings around it? San Francisco has a building on lean because of other developers fukking around with another building in the vicinity.

When many of these buildings were built, nobody was building with the foresight to know that a massive paradigm shift would render this form of working outdated. It would take years to convert these buildings into housing...and then you're faced with the reality that developers are going to charge higher rents to recoup on their investment.

i'm not saying you're wrong ( because i agree that they should be converted to mixed use), but that this isn't as simple or quick as people are making it out to be.

The shift was coming when cloud computing became mainstream its just naïve boomers/gen xers thinking that people like office culture.

My company had just bought our new headquarters a year before the pandemic hit. They moved offices all of our stuff.

A 6 story state of the art building. After the pandemic they ended up consolidating everything on the bottom floor and rented out the other 5 floors to 4 different companies and rented out the name on the building too

It’s optional to come into the office. Nobody comes in but our director most days. I have not been in the office since Covid popped off

A lot of downtowns are effectively wastelands after the evening rush is gone... had they been built with the intention of people living there vice simply commuting to work, it'd be less of an effort to convert them.

granted, a lot of the disruption in how working could be ( we work, open floor plans, "fun" zones in office) all failed miserably so i get why people thinking that a form of work that had existed for the better part of 100 years was the way it should be.

I feel that many of these buildings were built just because of hubris, and not for any established need for them to be as tall as they are....only cause the materials were there and you could do it.

None of them really want to admit that a lot of the push for people to go back into offices, is cause they're still paying leases for space they're not using....and many middle management jobs are effectively useless position that could be removed.

Both of these points are true.

The economic ruling class been forcing 9-5ers to commute to the office for decades. I have more sympathy for employers that allow for a few work from home days per week or month, but the facts are the facts

Pre 2020, Employees are expected to foot the bill for gas, commuting, etc. But that genie aint going back into the bottle. 2020, the world got introduced to remote work by force :manny:

Now I gotta read these corporate sob stories :russ:
People have to start commuting again. Our real estate investments depend on it. :mjcry:

Some companies have been taking advantage of the poor job market to pressure new hires to come back in, but its only a matter of time until things pick back up.

The only people I feel bad for are the mom and pop restaurants downtown that make a living off corporate workers coming in for lunch. But I dont feel bad for these big companies and office developers at all. My sweet spot has always been in-office half the week, at home half the week

It's not healthy to be at home all day everyday even if you work there. Your not getting enough movement, socialization or stimulation and you need to replace that social interaction and basic physical activity or your physical and mental health with eventually be affected. It doesn't even take long.

Work from home should not mean sir your ass down all day in the house.
Why do people assume that wfh means you at home all day And not leaving the house?? I leave the house more now than I did when going to work because I have more flexibility and I no longer have a commute.

What you’re saying only comes into play if all your social interaction is through work.

Gym, Family & Friends actually see me more post Covid. It’s just more time in the day to interact with others.

I can talk on the phone at work but don’t as I gotta filter what I talk about. At home I can catch up with my people all while getting my work done :manny:

That's good but you are an exception not the rule. People assume that because it's happening a lot. There's a huge segment of society who only had social interaction outside their families or homes at work. Especially in older populations.

Been working from the crib for years :ahh:

My PlayStation gets so much use, catch up with shows, run my errands. Less money spent on commute and as soon as it’s time to jump out I close the laptop already suited and booted for the gym

:wow:

Cosign. The less people on the roads, the better.

Nobody mad and nobody love the office. First thing I said in my post. I left corporate life specially because of office life many years before a pandemic. :skip:

I dunno why this forum loves thinking everything comes from a salty place 😭

You got people in here that damn well know the only physical activity they got daily was that walk from the car park into office , climbing some stairs up and down thru the day and walking to a food court 😞.... That are in here pretending they haven't lost a step and don't see the sense in my words :skip:

Hence I said go outside not to be a salty hater but just looking out for the brehs :yeshrug:

I'll learn to say less on this forum or I should i guess.
man, people who want to exercise will

I got a gym in my apartment and a Golds down the street.. I don’t exercise at work, I’m usually sitting at a desk or screen and walking to a random meeting.. thats not exercise

I can walk to my kitchen, walk to the gym, or go exercise on my break if I was WFH.. or buy my own equipment and do my own thing WHILE working

I could save like 3-6 hours of my day not going into this bullshyt. 1-2 hours getting ready, 1-2 hours commuting, 1-2 hours working out..

Most of these people complaining are the one who LIKE this bullshyt. Probably hardly doing shyt.

I’m at the office now, and I’m trying to learn something but can barely concentrate because of all the shyt going on around me. I have to throw on headphones to drown them out or take work home so I can understand wtf I’m trying to do.

This

Less people on the roads, less cluttered stores, less accidents, less pollution, etc.

I be trying to do shyt after work so I dont have to come back out and there’s traffic every gotdamn where with people trying to go home.

By the time I do get home, I don’t feel like doing shyt. I might force myself to the gym but even that shyt is crowded sometimes or I’ll still have to deal with traffic

This 9-5 office bullshyt is for the birds.

I did the math awhile back for myself (LA commute).

2 total hours of commute every day (for literally a 10 mile commute)
45 minutes to get ready in the morning.
Another 45 minutes to fully wind down aftert the commute home.
--------------
3.5 hours each day more or less for commute related bullshyt
x5 days
--------------
17.5 hours per week because of commute and commute-related bullshyt.
x52 weeks per year
--------------
910 hours/year
x4 doing this the last four years
--------------
3640 hours

Not to mention the time saved everyday from needless distractions, meetings, everyday hassle, etc.

Literally wasted time on bullshyt.

Never fukking going back to the office.
