relapse was a return to his 97/98 days...that was an unbelievable conceptual album.

the fact that it went over so many heads is still dumbfounding to me. especially genuine hip hop heads. that album is purely about the demons of slim shady.....it was so well worked it still amazes me, because you have references to some of the things he was talking about in his earlier days that so many people missed (such as the slim shady ep cover which was basically the undertone to an entire song). i'd bet my life eminem loves that album.

recovery was a mess, if there was anyone who ever said dre was overrated, recovery is the proof of how much he means to eminem's music....without it, there was no collective sound, and despite some great tracks (25 to life, going thru changes etc.), overall it was his biggest disappointment, simply because he caved into industry demands.

Post-Encore. He's not that bad these days Relapse showed that he can go crazy rhyming if he wants to but he chooses not to. Around Curtain Call and the Re-up dude was barely rapping he was talking loud. Also for someone who gets stereotyped as a typical shock rapper he changed his style of rhyming a lot.

Infinite Em: Nas/AZ hybrid (especially AZ, close your eyes and listen to the title track, it's practically AZ) Normal subject matter compared to the rest of his career

SSLP Em: Developed his own style here, below average flow as he used to go off beat just to finish a rhyme (traces of Redman/Masta Ace) Adopted fantasy raps as part of his technique and largely abandoned the working joe approach on Infinite (If I Had notwithstanding)

MMLP Em: Lyricism stepped up here IMO perfected rhyming sounds as opposed to words on this album (<---this is a reason why he's one of the best technically)

TES/8 Mile OST Em: Lyricism took a backseat in order to improve his flow, became pretty balanced as a result. IMO He was at his best here. his voice changed which is something that no one seems to point out Em used to be overly nasal and had a noticeable accent on his first two albums compared to the rest of them

Gangsta Em: after signing 50 and G-Unit lol

Encore/Curtain Call/Re-Up Em: In hindsight, you can hear him on drugs when you listen to tracks from this time (compare the difficult track he recorded to proof with when im gone, fack, some songs with cashis, and no apologies) Whereas Em used to be overly lyrical with poor flow, Encore had Em trying different flows and fully blending with the beat which is the only good thing about the album (evil deeds my 1st single crazy in love big weenie, etc.) the rest of the album he was on that talk rap shyt.

Relapse Em: IMO the most technical he's ever been and some songs are amazing because of it (deja vu, stay wide awake :omg:, same song and dance, 3am) unfortunately his content was the weakest it's ever been. Em was once able to balance delivery and content, he definitely doesn't do it here.

Recovery Em: Lyricism and his flow took a backseat for him to adopt punchlines into his raps. Eminem is NOT a punchline rapper. at all.

Screaming Em: People forgot he was doing this for a while after Recovery.

Doubletime/Tripletime Em: This is where he is currently and while I prefer this style to his punchlines/screaming he is far from what he used to be.

pretty good breakdown tbh
