Well, part of the problem is education. If you aren't educated, you are pretty much putting yourself behind the 8-ball after you finish high school. And then, there are those who drop out of high school. They are behind those who are behind the 8-ball.
Education is not the great equalizer, but if you get a college degree, you need to leverage it. You, the student, are taking a big risk if you major in history. Do you want to be a history teacher or professor or do you want to work in insurance sales? You can position yourself for success. Don't major in something that doesn't give you skills. Communication is risky, much like history majors. A very slim number actually get a successful career in radio, TV, or print media. Everyone else just gets washed out and take a career in a different direction than their major, like assistant manager at Forever 21 or something unrelated to anything you learned in college.
Rich folks, they can major in philosophy or English Literature and get a starting management job earning 6-figures and get trained on how to do the job in their daddy's company. Yeah, it's a different world if you are white and rich. If you are white and not rich, then I think you still have the same hurdles as everyone else.
Law, accounting, medicine, computer technology. Those position yourself to becoming successful or at least ahead of the 8-ball.
