"The Spartans were a paradoxical people. They were the biggest slave owners in Greece. But at the same time, Spartan women had an unusual level of rights. It's a paradox that they were a bunch of people who in many ways were fascist, but they were the bulwark against the fall of democracy. The closest comparison you can draw in terms of our own military today is to think of the red-caped Spartans as being like our special-ops forces. They're these almost superhuman characters with a tremendous warrior ethic, who were unquestionably the best fighters in Greece. I didn't want to render Sparta in overly accurate terms, because ultimately I do want you to root for the Spartans. I couldn't show them being quite as cruel as they were. I made them as cruel as I thought a modern audience could stand."
"I have King Leonidas very gently tell Ephialtes, the hunchback, that they can't use him [as a soldier], because of his deformity. It would be much more classically Spartan if Leonidas laughed and kicked him off the cliff."
Wow. I didn't realize that film was such a Birth of A Nation-esque whitewashing. It's interesting how white folks will blatantly rewrite history in order to push propaganda, but will then turn around and complain about "accuracy" when it comes to fairy tale characters like The Little MermaidYup, whole movie was a propaganda fest. Frank Miller, who wrote the original comic, was a right-wing libertarian. There were a few other things in there that were historically inaccurate but meant to feed a message.
* The Spartan hero of the movie calls the Athenians "boy lovers". But in reality, the Spartans themselves had man-boy sexual relationships institutionalized into their schools.
* The Persian ambassador says some nasty shyt about Spartan women. But in reality, those lines were from the Greek Philosopher Plutarch
* The traitor, Ephialtes, wasn't disabled in real life. The writer just turned him into a disabled guy so he could make a sick point about hating weakness
Look at these quotes from Frank Miller:
Translation: He's portraying violent slave-owning fascists as heroes necessary to save democracy. He then re-writes history to make their violent fascism palatable to a modern audience.

The pure unadulterated truth about how disgusting and backwards Vikings were. These movies and television shows today ain't telling how those barbaric, nasty b*stards really got down.
