Protect himself from what? The whole point of sliding is to protect yourself, they can't hit you when you go down.

And whats the difference anyways? Protecting yourself by injuring someone else is still a dirty play. If you don't want to get tackled then dont run (or does that rule only apply to "athletic" QBs ) Thats like a boxer saying "I only kicked him in the balls cuz he was gonna punch me in the face.
