I really enjoyed that. The author was clearly a very perceptive and intelligent man
Extremely intelligent. And you can tell that he didn't had the belief that the Western world's values were superior to his own culture. That was a common belief in Japan at that time after they were forced to open up and interact with the West.

a lot of people had original opinions and views before media propaganda
Media propaganda always existed, it just turned up a notch with the advent of radio, television, and the Internet. This was before all of this which meant you had to grow up in a certain culture to have a negative thought on a group of people. Nobody in Tajikistan were watching Worldstar videos showing Black people acting like buffoons in 1872.

"Media propaganda always existed" NO not on the same level. word of speech and paper could only reach so far plus language barriers... visuals are far more impactful and imprinted. it's no coincidence the first feature length film was the KKK coming out party "birth of a nation"

He starts talking about race around the 8:00minute mark.

it’s actually sad this foreigner came to the US around that time and didn’t feel the slightest bit of discomfort. Wasn’t worried about his life. Yet, blacks at that time were being hunted.
