Dwight Howard believes he was robbed of 2011 NBA MVP: "I think the only reason D-Rose won was because they wanted the storyline"

A lot of the D Rose MVP takes are revisionist history

Once the Bulls won 60 and swept the Heat, D Rose winning was a formality. He literally won in a landslide, there was not some big debate over MVP that year

Bron was never even a serious candidate bc he & Wade were considered 1A/1B that year , the Bulls owned them in the RS and that was the peak of Bron hate fresh off The Decision. And the Magic didn’t have enough wins for Dwight to have a serious chance, they were like the 8th best team in the league
Not to mention, Chris Bosh was the third option on the Heat averaging about 19ppg which was more than both Boozer and Deng who were the second leading scorers on the Bulls that year. Hell, Wade averaged more points than Rose that season. Imagine LeBron being “robbed” when he has a teammate who’s averaging almost 26ppg (just over a point less than him).

These numbers may not seem impressive now that the stats are more inflated, but prior to Rose’s MVP season when he averaged 25ppg and 7.7 assists, the only players who averaged those numbers in the past 25 years were Jordan, Iverson, LeBron and Wade.

That’s back when the MVP vote was more standardized…being the best player on the best team put you drivers seat to win it….the justifications to give it to players on lower seeded teams weren’t flying around as freely back then…I’m still not convinced they’re not gonna rob Shai this year and he’s having like a prime Jordan year and won 68 games lol

Agreed...

Unless it's Jeff Teague. Dude funny as hell with his NBA stories..lol
Bruh him and BHen the funniest people on earth

Teague basketball takes are good, but just like any athlete with a podcast he got his bias takes. Like he tries to downplay Dwade all the time which I think is a personal issue he got with him, but it's why you can't take most athletes word like it's the God truth they downplay people they don't like all the time

None of this does anything to dispel the fact that Rose winning was largely narrative driven. He more than likely was not even a top 5 player in the league that year, he didn't put up eyepopping stats. He's lucky as hell analytics/advanced stats weren't as prevalent back then, otherwise he might not have even been in the conversation. The Bulls 60 wins and best record in the league had more to do with the fact that they were the top defensive team in the league than anything Rose did offensively.

Multiple things can be true - It was narrative driven, as most MVPs are. Also in real time 14 years ago it wasn’t seen as a controversial choice.

There were only a very small minority of people who were really arguing for LeBron or Dwight to win MVP in 2011. People have retroactively gone back and looked at the numbers, and what their careers became to change opinion
