Hey OP
it has nothing to do with quantizing. Trust me when i say this. For example, You really think Dr Dre's drums aren't quantized? GET THE fukk OUTTA HERE.
AND TO ALL YOU YOUNG UPCOMING BEATMAKERS. ITS NOT THE QUANTIZING
I seen this shyt in my younger days of when i used to make beats and have seen the producer forums talk about quantizing like its a disease.
Thats not what makes your drums sound robotic!!!!
What makes your shyt sound robotic is your choice of drum sounds, effects, and volume levels.
STOP using "dirty" snare mixed with an "808" hi hat and a "deep" kick drum that are all from different sources.
if you dont think that wont sound robotic than what will?
And if anyone here thinks its actually due to timing. YOUR DEAD WRONG.
Oh you disagree with me? OK GO AHEAD AND CHOP UP A FAMOUS DRUMBREAK. Chop up the famous drumbreak and quantize it at about the same bpm the original recording was.
It WILL SOUND JUST FINE AND AMAZING AS IT WAS.
You know why??? Because its from the SAME SOURCE and was RECORDED in the SAME WAY and has the SAME audio qualities.
Anyway quantizing is your friend and not the enemy. TRUST ME when i say this.
In addition, it may just sound robotic because the mood of your drums just really dont fit the mood of the beat anyway
i'm drunk and done rambling.
