Maybe but maybe not. Dance culture was already prevalent in american culture so it might be the same just with live bands instead of using other peoples music. In fact it would have probably been the way it is now since most people don't sample like they used to and it probably won't be any beefs or battles on record. I think the battling aspect also comes from jamaica.
Don't get me wrong, those are important aspects of hip hop that helped it grow into what it is now but, I don't think they are that major since the art of rapping is what most people define to hip hop music and that was done in black american music since the 1960's(pigmeat markham) and done the same way rappers do it today and when rap music started. Even the beats sounded like a hip hop record that was made in the 90's-mid 2000's, just not as clear or as loud as now, and no electronic drum sounds.
