Why the hell would anyone put themselves through this tomfoolery

My brother just tried to teach me to drive his ford truck and I killed the engine about 3,000 times :jada:
Well, just to let you know, the engine can take that kind of abuse. It's the clutch that gets the brunt of beginner's mistakes.

Are replacement clutches expensive?

Depends on the car. I paid $2700 ($1500 parts + $1200 labor) to get mine done 1 1/2 years ago.

Learn it though, taking off is the hardest part (not stalling). Once you master that you good. Look on youtube at some videos, i'm sure theres some videos where theres a camera on the drivers foot in the corner so you can see how to let off the clutch and get on the gas.

After you get the hang of it, rev the car up to 5 on rpm gauge in 1st with the clutch in, then just take your foot off the clutch really quickly. It'll help you get moving much faster.

Lol @ learning from a video.

I learned from driving tractors at work. We had to transport some to a state fair and we were driving on the road and I kept stalling out. After that I spent time at work practicing. It's not that hard.

But a car is another story. I can do just about anything except go from neutral to 1st from a stop. But once I'm going I'm good. It's easy to know when to shift. When I get some free time imma buy a cheap manual Geo Metro ($400) and use it strictly for practicing manual driving before giving it to my nephew or something

Nope. Taking the car apart to get to the clutch is though. :lolbron:
This is true.

To the original poster, if you can find a certified mechanic who works independently (moonlighting after hours), you can get the labor costs down.
The clutch kit itself is usually under $100.
The labor cost is multiple times that. :(

They have to separate the engine and the transmission to get to the clutch. This is easier said than done because there are so many parts that have to be taken off before you even get to the point of separating the transmission and engine. Then, after the clutch is replaced, you have to put it all back together again.

much more control over the car with a stick, you can brake better accelerate how you want to and conserve gas if you want to...also maneuver easier threw traffic with down and upshifting..you determine how the car drives, not the car determining for you basically...

I've taught a couple people by letting them keep it parked in a lot, in neutral, then pressing on the gas with the clutch pedal pressed until the engine gets to 3K RPMs then slowly letting off the clutch. Then they can practice going idle to first doing the same thing. Only gets easier from there (with practice).

Learned how to drive stick shift reight before i went to college...

shyt is fun as hell....Until u get into highway traffic :snoop:

The highway's the easiest part. :sheit:

Stop and go traffic in the city is what can be a pain in the ass.

I just got a new car and it's an automatic because I didn't want to deal with this awful stop and go shyt around here. If I move and get to a place with better traffic, I'm gonna have to sell it and get a stick though. :whew:

I really need to learn because my next car is going to be a shift. My ex tried to teach me with his M3 but i freaked out because i didnt want to damage the engine(he ended up totalling it anyway) :sadbron:

Is anyone so adept at it that, whilst on a steep ass hill...

they can keep one foot on the gas and the otha on the clutch and just keep it leveled like that?

Seattle got a lot of hills like Grant; so if you clutch game is whack, you're bound to fall back on the auto behind you.

Happened to me once and good thing i didn't have a pistol cuz i was sweating bullets like before the Wizards.

I still suck with manual trannies and i don't think i'll ever cop one, but i does want to get gooder at it.

I taught my girl and my sister, you really can't mess up the engine, you can burn out the clutch or fukk up the synchros on shifts, but that's pretty rare even for a new user. It's honestly easy, once you finally feel the point when the clutch engages everything just clicks.

My father taught me when I was 12 :yeshrug:
