i remember he hosted one of those mtv countdown shows & said he was a big fan of marilyn manson & they were one of the best live bands he had seen. dunno what the big deal is. if you're a producer you should at least be knowledgeable about other genres. and it goes both ways. radiohead wanted dre to produce one of their albums (also prince paul). instead of being formulaic, why not learn from the people that are the most skilled..

people in general are just casual fans of music. This man made an empire from it. This is his passion of course he's going to listen to NIrvana and other genres and listen for the drums, snares etc. How many rock samples have hip hop artists sampled and folks here loved? Well those producers had to listen to it to sample it!
Also producing for other genres is where the money is. Bigger budgets. It's not uncommon for producers to cross genres. For example im cool with Jahlil Beats and he's crossing over to EDM he has an artist Bok Nero who tours with Steve Aoki and they gettin to the bag.
