There's "industry" and then there's "industry" though. The suits don't fukk with Drake but he still has a lot of rappers and hit makers in his corner. I agree he has struggled to get a big hit without features but still...a hit is a hit. Until he flops with an album I'm not gonna say he's done. Even with the label no longer smashing the button for him.
When Jay lost he was still the bigger rapper with more hits. And after the BP2 fiasco he got back to making hits and never looked back. Obviously Drake isn't Jay but still. The L doesn't end you if you get hits.
The industry still drew for Jay though. Like I said Angie Martinez literally is on record talking about how hurt and upset she was that Jay lost the battle. Hot 97 wouldn’t let Nas hang the Jay-Z robot and set it on fire not because they were morally opposed to it, but because Dame Dash complained and got it shut down. Jay’s loss was acknowledged but he had friends in high enough places that something like “Ether winning five grammys and the entire room stands in applause while bellowing “You Pop shyt apologize nikka just ask Kiss!” Was NEVER within the realm of possibility.
What we saw Grammy night is something never before seen in popular music. Jay-Z said fukk Drake. Beyonce said fukk Drake. TAYLOR SWIFT said fukk Drake. Any and all artists are going to be thinking twice about collaborating with him, and for the first time they’ll be empowered to think aloud that collabing would be doing HIM a favor not the other way around. A hit is a hit BUT does 21 do another track with Drake when its not guaranteed he can come back from this sonning? He can’t run to Future. He can’t run to Metro. He can’t run to SZA. He damn sure can’t run out West to anybody but Game, whose not moving the needle anymore.
His post battle solo singles all flopped.
This PartyNextDoor album is going to be extremely interesting as to the continued commercial relevance he has or doesn’t have. If it sells anything less than 300k first week its going to look like a massive failure and you can bet the honchos over at UMG are going to make SURE that failure is felt far and wide.
