Hiphop wasn't universally accepted and popular in those days, so thats an irrelevant comparison 
These days, Kanye did "crazy" numbers with TLOP a few months earlier. Then Views dropped and made those numbers look small AF

Counting streams is obviously the correct thing but it's not a perfect measure, you can go platinum if people only listen to one song. So people like Pitbull and Flow rider can now go plat, which obviously doesn't reflect the activity of their album but of that machine promoted single.
What Drake did was smart (but difficult), he dropped an album full of singles. It's singles for different people. While I might only play 3 songs (hype, Weston road flow and Views), I play them constantly which makes it seem like I play the album all the time and generates sales for Drake. Some other cat might only like the slow songs, then of course the big singles and on.
So all in all no one might actually fukk with the album, they just have 2-3 songs that they really fukk with.
