To be honest, the only parts of the franchise that has even remotely good storytelling are the King Piccolo, Saiyan and Namek arcs and the 90s Bardock and Future Trunks specials. Everything else just runs on the fights, the appeal of the characters and the humor.
To me the entire OG Dragonball series is the beat storytelling except for maybe the Pilaf saga
