You have chakra points in your body, that are there to limit your physical and ki strengths, without those limiters in place your body/health would erode(age) 100x faster, because the vessel(your skins and bones) arnt made for that level of continuous wear and tear. Achieving the ability to open those gates (8 of them in total), gives you the different sets of powers for each opened one, for example: Opening gate one removes the restraints of the brain on the muscles so 100% of the user's strength can be used whereas normally, a person can only use 20% of their muscles' strength to keep them from disintegrating. Basically after a short time of being in this state, the effects of opening your chakra points will go away, and your body will feel incredible physical, and mentally debilitating pain.
