I think it's been discovered already that emotion is a major trigger to their power ups so seeing someone else near death can trigger that emotion.I FINALLY got it!
And I don't care if you scour the internet for it, you're not gonna find it cause it just hit me!

No, seriously! look at the timeline of Goku/Vegeta/Gohan/etc powering up
Being that is no killing, the tournament benefited the sayains mostly

Vegeta stated that as he didnt know how much he had surpassed Goku with Goku obtaining UI, but it was easy for him to read Jirens movements and hit him, this situation was kind of like Gohan with Cell, pay attention brehs....
Vegeta knew he was stronger but not that much stronger, Vegeta even responded to Goku powering up causing an explosion as a silly stunt last episode

I think a part a ton a people missed on last episode was when Jiren was "I'm aiming for beyond strength" and Goku was like "me too" and Jiren was like " I see. You don't know". I think there's a power that can be obtain that is beyond strength. Something only the God's have mastered and Jiren is trying to reach that.
