Not urgent and BW will do their best to fill you in on the lore (hell, I played both previous DA games and have forgotten damn near everything sans the fact that my Warden has a child) but you've got to play Origins sometime down the line.
You can get it with all the DLC on Amazon for about $30 - $19.99 depending on whatever direction the price is fluctuating.
Origins was great. DA2 is very skippable.

Not sure how I feel about the lack of healing magic in this game. I always used to run with a dedicated healer but that's not possible now.

well hopefully the pacing and sense of progression is consistent for those 85 hours. it could just be 'padded' with a bunch of grinding or other repetitive shyt
