From what I learned of her during her younger days her family affiliated her with Japan because USA tennis wouldn’t give her any play or support. I believe US tennis groups are still pissed that their top players are two sisters from a low income family. It goes against what they believe tennis represents. I have high school tennis players in my family and I see how pissed the parents are when non-white kids win, especially black kids. Japan have Naomi a chance to play top tier and her family took her talents back to Japan.
