Honestly I've never payed too much attention to Dr. Dre's flow or lyrics, since I've always knew it wasn't him anyway. So it doesn't bother me much that in this project I can't even tell when Dre comes through. It really doesn't bother me because if he didn't rap at all in here I wouldn't have minded either, except maybe for the "Talking To My Diary"/"All In A Day's Work" joint. Those ones just had to be him.
I'm very pleased with this album though, sonically it's just so much piff . Best beats I've heard consecutively in an album all year 10/10. The lyrics/delivery would be a 6.5/10 because so much of isn't exactly groundbreaking. The ad-lib game in this shyt is 10/10 though, this feels like the change Rakim brough to the game in terms of flow. Dre made sure that the ad-libs here were truly interwoven with the beat, it doesn't feel separate from the bars, beat like it usually does. I'm saying the ad-libs here definitely feel different from the way they are usually used.
Dre couldn't change Em to the old Em, but he at least made him go a little slower in the tempo this time and somehow less corny. The rape bar here didn't even make me cringe as much as the window pane one.
Xzibit and COLD 187 (the use of the ad-libs on his part definitely enhanced his verse)
This Anderson Paak dude...damn
I really really enjoy this album. I was very pleasantly surprised. It definitely feels as full of instruments as TPAB but I didn't mind that then and I don't mind it now. No matter how much I like the new minimalistic beats, I also enjoy these ones where the artists have the money to put orchestras in the recording process.
Amazing Job Dr. Dre, truly.
