I was born in Texas. I just don't live there right now, but I did for 25 years.....
I was between Dallas and Houston several times this summer and I legitimately had to reassess how hot I thought ATL was. That was UNREAL. And then to find out thats even not normal for Texas?

Gotcha- not sure how long it’s been but here in Austin area the no state tax is quickly evaporated by general living.
I’ve never had such high energy bills being from the East Coast, for starters. Property taxes here are absurd with their change year over year. Too many Mexicans, folksy racist crackers, healthcare, education etc are lacking but hey a gun for everyone is something I guess for those who love it. The drivers are crazy, an insane DUI and crash issues, segregation and lack of diversity. I just had a son and he won’t be growing up here. I moved for family (nephew was coming) but they’re all gone now, I would’ve too but being pregnant and busy aren’t ideal for a cross country move. Gonna head over to Houston next year, stack, save and house on the east coast by 2025-6.
Austin is a whole other animal, I'll agree. Not worth it for cost of living and how fukkin crowded it is.
When I made the comment I was thinking more about Dallas suburbs (manageable at least). My mom owns 2 houses in the area and while she does complain about property taxes, that passive income has her sitting nicely.
As for segregation, I never really dealt with that but yes, Texas got a lot of Mexicans. I just used that too my advantage

I currently live in Nevada, it's worse here than I ever remember in Texas and this is from licensed residents who speak English. MFS be running red lights killing whole families. That football player is in jail for hitting a woman's car going 150+ on Vegas Blvd. Also seen multiple vids of ppl ignoring traffic signs and killing up everyone involved.
The problems y'all seeing aren't exclusive to Texas, the whole country is literally going to shyt

I'm down 35 from you in NE San Antonio. My energy bills are only bad from June to October, drivers are definitely terrible, diversity is better down here because we're surrounded by 3-4 military bases so a lot of AF people get out and stay here. I made some friends here fairly quickly because of some family who moved here a year prior to us, so I got put on to the spots where we typically are if I want to go and chill among my people.
Property taxes are my big issue, approaching year 3 and it's been sky rocketing. State politics are obviously sh*tty, local politics are fairly liberal in comparison to most of the state. One of the best things I realized living here though, are the veteran benefits throughout the state. I can say I've saved a lot of money or got put on to some decent folks being a vet.

Don't kid yourself. Privatization of public assets is a bipartisan tradition. You should see what our Dems have done here in Chicago. Sold the parking meters and the toll road connecting IL to Indiana and all points east.

Still assessing Texas as a whole. Yeah it’s cheaper than where I came and no state tax, people have been cool for the most part (I don’t really go out anywhere though), no state tax and gas seems great to me
But idk about this place yet. I was planning on buying a house eventually but idk.. a lot of people want to move away from here.
I will say my job/commute are probably the most stressful things but I get taxed like crazy. If/when I get 100% disability, I might re-assess staying out here. Texas isn’t what I was expecting.
Didn't know you ended up down there, was just down in SA for nearly a week in September. As visitors, wife and I loved it down there and we were with another couple the wife of which was from down there so we had more of an inside track. We loved it down there and wouldn't be mad about living there down the road, BUT just saw an article that SA is declining in population overall.
We spent a few days in Austin as well, but that area felt a lot like the DC suburbs to me with crazy real estate and an overall lack of identify, it was like a watered down version of what I expected. Side note, Austin is home to Live Oak Brewing, which was definitely worth it and I'm wild jealous I can't get their stuff around here.
all state govts require income, if they don't get it via state income tax, they're getting it somewhere else. you will ultimately pay the man.

100% is the way to go - I'm still trying to get there myself. Completely eliminates the property taxes with several other benefits. I got multiple partnas from various branches that did 20, got out and are working and getting all of their money. And got a couple late 40's early 50's who are straight retired living off their 100% and some passive income enjoying life down here.

Yeah man, I was real skeptical of whether I'd like it or not but I've grown to really like it here. It's a very low ball big city. I enjoy the feeling of being out the way. H-Town is an easy 2 hour drive east, Austin is less than an hour for quick turn arounds, and Dallas is an annoying 4 hours to chill with the wife's family.
Austin is cool to hang out, quick brunch trip or evening drinking but I wouldn't want to live there. A little disappointed in it's "tech scene" but I think a lot of that was over hyped because of so many people relocating from California pre-pandemic. There are still a lot of people moving here to outpace those who are leaving, I think we flux between 6th and 5th biggest city in the US.
Next time you're in town, hit me up we'll grab a beer.
