I'm a Canadian.
The mentality used to be that he's bluffing and just trying to use these threats to renegotiate free trade but as time passes, the mentality over here is becoming more and more to assume he's serious. And if he's serious, then i guess it's up on both sides. On one hand Canadians feel like a lot of the people are anti trump so we don't hate Americans. On the other hand the majority of y'all voted for him so i guess he still represents the people.
Personally, i think he's kinda right in some ways. It's true that Canada doesn't meet it's 2% contributions for NATO. He's also right that we lean on the USA for security. Is it fair or not, it's hard to say. I'm guessing there are geopolitical reasons as to why having a safe neighboring country safe and stable maybe helps make the USA safer overall. I won't even pretend like i understand these things though. I always assumed it was a win-win but maybe i was wrong all along.
Either way i guess it's time for us to hold our own nuts. It is what it is. Might even be positive for Canada in a sense because it's like a wakeup call we may have needed. Time to stop being naive.
One thing I'll say, whatever the world looks like in 4 years, the USA will be VERY isolated...
In a sane world, the US would just cut its military spending in half and spend that money on citizens instead forcing other countries to spend 2% of their GDP buying American weapons of war.
