Kobe did not have as much pull as Lebron does now, mainly because players never did back then. Lebron didn't even have as much pull in the Heat years as he does now.
But the commonality between their two situations is shortsighted ownership who runs their billion dollar business like a mom and pop shop. It all starts there.

The thing about Kobe is he said Westbrook is one of the players who most reminded him of himself. Think he would've been on board with Russ coming to LA as much as anyone, but he also might've been the one guy who could've helped Russ find his role with this group. I always think about that "secret advice" he gave Kyrie during the Finals.
Vogel doesn't do Russ any favors playing him with Bradley, Ariza and Dwight. Those guys are too old to run with him.

That makes it their decision. Not Pelinka’s. That’s not to say Pelinka doesn’t also like Russ and may have also wanted him. Since we know Kobe liked Russ it’s easy to believe Pelinka may have too. But that’s irrelevant to the point of who decided to bring him to this team.
Bron and AD had that big meeting at Bron’s house with Westbrook before the trade. That was Bron feeling out the situation to see if he felt it would work. So from there he tells Rob to get it done.
Pelinka might have been the one who originally brought the deal to the table but this is ultimately decided by Klutch. Pelinka isn’t doing this trade if Bron doesn’t want Westbrick here.
