Assuming I'm understanding your question correctly, it's just going to depend on how much you have to put in and how much the price moves before you clear a $500 gain.

Example based on current price of 40 cents:

Invest $2000, price will need to increase to 50 cents to clear $500

Or

Invest $10,000, price will need to increase to 42 cents to clear $500

The math is why a lot of folks who got in early are eating right now. Putting in $100 a couple of weeks ago when this thing was sitting at 5 cents would have cleared you a little over a $700 gain today.

and to get that money, you have to sell your shares right?

Keeping with the .40 example, if you put in $2000, that would get you 5,000 shares. If the price moves up to .50, now your 5,000 shares are worth $2,500. To keep the $500 gain you're looking for, you would have to sell 1,000 shares at .50
